Herbal Remedies Natural Health Newsletter, November 2005, Issue 253: "Now a new study(8) has added a simple spice to the list of possible AD preventatives: Turmeric .
Curcuma longa is a ginger-like plant that grows in tropical regions. The roots contain a bright yellow substance (turmeric) that contains curcumin and other curcuminoids. Turmeric has been used in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for centuries, but it's only within the past few years that western medicine has taken note of curcumin?s disease-preventing properties.(9)
In the study, researchers found that curcumin ?significantly reduced? the buildup of beta-amyloid protein in the synapses between the brain cells that are critical for memory. They went on to recommend taking between 400-500 mg of turmeric three times per day, but cautioned that ?individuals prone to bleeding or on blood thinners should not take turmeric?.(10)"

Can Ayurveda cure HIV/AIDS?

If Government will take initiative to establish Ayurveda Research Centre, then India will soon find out the medicine to treat the HIV/Aids, said Dr P Sivarama, noted Ayurveda practitioner.

Speaking to the reporters here on Wednesday, he said the Indian Herbal Therapy used for Cytomegaloviral Esophagitis (HIV patients) had recently proved effective and affordable drug for HIV.

He said CD4 - a part of White Blood Corpuscles - drops in HIV patient due to viruses. This renders the patient weak getting fever and the patient even cannot gulp his saliva, as it causes a pain in the chest, said Dr Sivarama.

He said the Ayurvedic therapy helps in destroying the viruses and the patient can be saved. Dr Sivarama said the Ayurvedic therapy mentioned, was not the complete solution for HIV/Aids patients, but it could certainly increase the life span of the patient.

Central directive may cripple ayurveda industry
- T Ramavarman
Ayurveda needs different protocols

THRISSUR: The latest notification of the Department of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Sidha and Homeopathy (AYUSH) of the Centre insisting that the herbal medicines to be exported should be free of heavy metals, will cripple the ayurvedic industry in the country, fear the leaders of the Ayurvedic Medicine Manufacturers' Organisation of India (AMMOI).

As per the AYUSH notification, the herbal medicines manufactured in the country will have to be tested for the presence of heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, mercury and cadmium, and it will have to be ensured that they contain these metals only below the permissible levels, before they are exported.

The AMMOI leaders feel that the notification appeared to be a knee-jerk reaction to a report in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) which claimed that tests conducted in the U.S. in some of the ayurvedic formulations exported from India indicated the presence of high levels of heavy metals in them. Coming as it does at a time when the interest in the Indian traditional medical system is on the ascend globally, the report and the subsequent campaign against ayurveda both in India and abroad could even be part of a design to dampen the prospects of this one of the oldest health care systems in the world, the AMMOI leaders apprehend.

General secretary of the AMMOI D. Ramanathan told The Hindu here that instead of taking such a step detrimental to the promising ayurvedic industry, the Government of India and AYUSH should have tried to convince the West as to how the Indian herbal medicines are safe and effective.

Medical purification

Dr. Ramanathan explained that no heavy metals are directly used in ayurvedic medicines. They are used only after the intense medical purification process called `Sodhana.' Medical purification is different from chemical purification - the former has multiple aims like eliminating harmful matter from the drug, modification of undesirable physical properties of the drug and conversion of some of the characteristics of the drugs, whereas the latter aims at only eliminating foreign matters.

The `Bhasma-based' ayurvedic formulations may have traces of heavy metals if they are subjected to conventional chemical tests. But we will have to evolve new protocols for testing the ayurvedic medicines in which the chemicals are used in compounds and not in isolation, Dr. Ramanathan said. Similarly new protocols for establishing the efficacy of ayurvedic medicines should be evolved instead of the Randomised Clinical Trials (RCT) used for modern medicine. Even the World Health Organisation (WHO) has accepted that traditional medicines which have a long lineage need not undergo RCT. They can be sold as medicines in the global market provided they have a stamp of approval from a recognised office in their country, said treasurer of the AMMOI E. T. Neelakandan Moos. The AMMOI leaders demanded that the Governments at the Centre and States should make more budgetary provisions for research in ayurveda so that they can be presented in a format acceptable to the global community.

Testing for heavy metals to be made compulsory

NEW DELHI: Testing for heavy metals in herbal medicines will be made compulsory from January 1, 2006. Licensed manufacturers of ayurvedic, unani and siddha medicines will have to carry "heavy metals within permissible limits" label on the containers meant for export. Such labelling will also become mandatory from next year, an official spokesperson said here on Monday. The Department of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH) has issued a notification in this regard under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940, making testing for heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, mercury and cadmium mandatory.

The permissible limits recommended by the World Health Organisation on "quality control methods for medicinal plants and materials" would be followed. In the case of mercury, the permissible limit will be one part per million (PPM).

Manufacturers who do not have in-house laboratory facilities would have to get their drugs tested by any approved laboratory, the spokesperson said.

Cell Phones Can Damage Your Eyes

A recent scientific study identified a link between microwave radiation of the kind emitted by cellular phones and two different kinds of damage to the eye. At least one type of damage apparently never heals.

When the eye is exposed for a prolonged time to microwave radiation, there is large-scale damage to the optical quality of the lens. But there seemed to be a maximum level to this kind of damage, and when the exposure stops, the damage begins to heal.

However, at the same time, a different kind of damage occurs at the microscopic level. Tiny "bubbles" appear on the surface of the lens. This kind of damage reaches no maximum level, but instead accumulates progressively, and it did not heal even after the experiment stopped. It was theorized that the bubbles were caused by friction between cells that were exposed to the radiation.

"We are in the midst of a global paradigm shift in health care:"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------At the centre of this change is Ayurvedic medicine, a healing system which promotes health using natural, nontoxic substances and which recognizes the important role of the mind and emotions. A paradigm is a model used to explain how and why events happen the way they do, and as mankind's comprehension of the universe evolves, new paradigms emerge. The best example of paradigm shifts is the field of modern physics. The classical Newtonian explanation of the world which for two hundred years was accepted as reality has now been replaced by quantum mechanics, superstrings, and field theory. In the old paradigm, every event had a definite cause and every action has an equal and opposite reaction. In the new paradigm, we describe events as possibilities instead of certainities and we recognise now the interconnectedness of all phenomena. The new explanation of the universe is, in a word, more holistic than the old reductionist view of explaining events in terms of separate, unrelated
components.

In the same way, the medical paradigm shift which we are experiencing today represents represents a movement towards holism. The old paradigm viewed the human being as a machine, with separate systems, organs and tissues; it separated mind and body into distinct categories. The new paradigm acknowledges the mutual interdependance of the physical body, mind, emotions and the environment in creating health and disease. Neither is there separation in the emerging face of medicine between physician and patient. The new paradigm has removed the absolute authority from the doctor and re-fashioned a model of shared responsibility between patient and physician - much in the same way that an electron forming a bond is shared between the two nuclei."

The author goes on to explain how he completed his Ph.D in Ayurveda in India he returned to the United States, attended regular medical school and earned a conventional MD degree with advanced training in general internal medicine. But he says;

"Today, in my medical practice at the NIAM, I generally do not use toxic pharmaceutical drugs, irritating allopathic medicines, vaccines, or serums."

He also says;

" There is truly only one healing force in this universe and that is Nature herself. Neither the synthetic medicines of the modern allopath nor the botanical medicines of the herbalist can effect healing. Only the inherent and universal forces of Nature can do that and it is the physician's role to facilitate and promote this process with the aid of natural, non-harmful physical, mental, and spiritual therapies."

"Almost all disease is curable. We each just have to discover our own unique path to balance and surrender to the Supreme."

Another Reason to Lose Weight: Obesity Now Found to Increase Risk of Dementia

By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, May 3, 2005, abstracted from "Obesity in middle age and future risk of dementia: a 27 year longitudinal population based study" in an early online issue of the British Medical Journal

Despite significant efforts at increasing awareness regarding the health risks of obesity, the number of Americans who are either overweight or obese continues to increase. Although 135 million Americans aged 20 and older are overweight or obese,(1) even more alarming has been the tripling of overweight and obese teenagers since 1976 in the United States.(2)
While an estimated 300,000 U.S. adults die of causes related to obesity, from heart disease to type 2 diabetes,(3) a new study(4) has found that obesity also increases the risk of death from dementia.
Dementia is defined as “a deterioration in cognitive ability.” Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease , the two most common forms of dementia, cost the US Healthcare system $5.6 billion and $100 billion each year, respectively.(5)
In the study, 10,276 men and women underwent a detailed health evaluation from 1964 to 1973 when they were aged 40-45 and were re-examined between January 1994 and April 2003 in an attempt to find any evidence of dementia.
The researchers found that obesity increased the risk of dementia by 74% while overweight people had a 35% greater risk for dementia. Finally, men and women with the lowest body fat levels had a 72% and 60% decreased risk for dementia, respectively, compared to subjects with the highest body fat levels.

India all set to show yoga power - The Economic Times: "India all set to show yoga power
India's more than 4,000-year-old yoga tradition may witness some high-octane trade disputes sometime from now. The Union government is building its muscles to bust the market monopolies on yoga that Western practitioners have been securing through copyrights, trademarks and patents. Yoga is a flourishing $27bn-a-year business in the US.

To start with, the government is making a digital database of 1,500 yoga postures and their therapeutic properties that can be used to overthrow the 134 patents on yoga accessories, 150 yoga-related copyrights and 2,315 yoga trademarks the US Patent Office has granted so far, sources said.

* Dealing the Deathblow to Supplements *

For over a decade world governments have tried to restrict your access to supplements through something called the Codex Alimentarius. The Codex was set up among 165 nations to govern food standards...supposedly to ensure international food safety.

But like most things governments get their hands on, it turned into something much different.

In the late '90s German drug companies got Codex to start pushing the idea to classify all supplements as DRUGS! Plus, under the German proposal, Codex would create its own list of "approved" supplements. All others become illegal. Two years ago, the European Union accepted this directive and plans to enforce it starting next August. It is a deathblow to supplements in Europe.

I thought the U.S. would never adopt such an extreme restriction but I've had to think again. In 1997, only an 11th-hour blitz by consumer advocates prevented it from happening here. And the matter has come under consideration again.

But Codex isn't the only threat to supplements in the U.S. A recent action in Europe spearheaded by the Germans may still get those restrictions enacted another way: through the World Trade Organization.

When we signed on with the WTO, we agreed to revise our regulations to comply with WTO policies. If we don't, the WTO can bring us before their Dispute Resolution Panel and force us to do so!

If they have their way, you'll lose access to thousands of natural products forever.

It recently happened in Australia. Over 1,300 products were recalled by a government agency. Under very suspicious circumstances. And it devastated health stores there. They had to pull 80% of their inventory off their shelves!

* What You Can Do *

If we want to keep our rights to alternative medicine, we have to stand together. And here's how you can help. Support the case brought by the British Alliance for Natural Health. They've filed suit to overturn the European Food Supplements Directive. You can get more information about it at www.alliance-natural-health.org. Write your state and national politicians and tell them to oppose these two acts: S.722, the Dietary Supplement Act, and H.R. 377, the Dietary Supplement Access and Awareness Act.

Time is running out. Promise yourself to do these two things today.

Yoga a cure to cure blood pressure and diabetes --

Mumbai’s renowned yoga centre, Kaivalyadham, has conducted the study to prove that yoga exercises are scientific and therapeutic, according to the findings of the study.
Individuals with a “Type A” personality are prone to heart attacks. India is already one of the most threatened countries by diabetes and heart attacks. Against this backdrop, it has become necessary to popularise the ancient science of yoga. The above study has only reaffirmed this fact. According to it, yoga has a soothing effect on one’s mind, making the individual feel calmer. Basically, yoga is controlling one’s lifestyle not just during the exercise period but over a period of life. By disciplining one’s habits, yoga helps in controlling cholesterol and also reduces the risk of heart disease.
Asthma patients can also benefit from therapeutic breathing exercises, which can increase their lung power. Yoga also serves as a means to clear the breathing passages. Deep breathing yoga exercises and other relaxation techniques help patients recover their mental and physical strength. These help diabetic patients by slowing down their metabolism.
Of course, some medical experts are still unsure about the effectiveness of yoga as a form of cure. They say that yoga doesn’t reduce the level of sugar so it doesn’t help a patient much.

Ayurvedic Metallic Medicines are NOT FATAL
- By Dr.Partap Chauhan

It is well documented in Ayurvedic texts that
metals are used in some Ayurvedic formulations. As in Modern Medicine
they describe the adverse effects a medicine can cause to various body
systems, similarly harmful effects of metallic medicines are also well
documented. For example in "Purva Khand of Bhava Prakash
Nighantu" (Dhatu-upadhatu Prakaran: verse 13) it is written,
"Consumption of Impure gold 'bhasm' (ashes) or pure gold 'bhasm'
consumed improperly may destroy strength, shukra dhatu (reproductive
tissue), cause diseases and even death". The antidotes of toxicity or
management of symptoms caused due to consumption of metallic medicines
are also vastly described.

There is a section in Ayurveda called "Rasa shastra" which describes the
use of metals, gems, minerals and poisons for manufacturing special
formulations to combat chronic and difficult diseases. Rasa Shastra can
be called "Vedic Chemistry". As the modern laboratory chemicals were not
invented in the Vedic era (3000 years ago), herbal juices were used
instead. Although the methods, of testing these metallic medicines
described in Rasa Shastra, sound outdated or unscientific, they seem be
based on some chemical principles. Because medicines declared non-toxic
through these methods do not create any harmful effects in the body. Not
only they are harmless, they work like 'steroids' used in modern
medicine and can do miracles in difficult disease conditions or even the
'incurable' diseases.

These Ayurvedic metallic medicines pass through extensive processing
before they are declared fit for internal use. The metals, gems and
minerals are first purified and then burnt several times and converted
to 'bhasm' (ash). Each time before burning, the metallic powders are
processed with fresh herb juices to neutralize their toxicity. Some of
the metals are burnt up to one hundred times to make sure the heaviness
or toxic effect of the metal is nullified. Once the 'bhasm' is ready it
is tested for toxicity. One of the numerous tests the "bhasm" has to
pass through is called 'varitar' which means the 'bhasm', once ready for
internal use, floats on water indicating non-existence of heavy metal in
it. The 'bhasms' are then transformed to compound formulas by mixing
herbal powders. Special herbal juices are used for processing the
compound formula. Thus these are no more toxic metals but non-toxic
herbo-metallic compounds. The modern chemical testing might still
indicate the presence of that metal in these compounds but according to
Ayurveda, these metals have been transformed to non- toxic form, which
is safe for internal use.

These lighter forms of metals (bhasm) contained in herbo-metallic
compounds work as carriers (yogavahi). This means they are able to carry
the herbs (mixed with them) faster to the desired site and start the
action immediately. They increase the bioavailability of the herbs to
the cell. They act as catalysts. After performing the desired action
these harmless light metals (bhasm) are eliminated out of body through
our waste excretory systems (urine and stool).

The multi ingredient compounds are formulated in a way that the
ingredients are capable of counter balancing any toxic effects, if any,
present in the herbs or metals (bhasm). Besides, the use of these
metallic preparations is discontinued after every 12 weeks for a couple
of weeks, so that the body can eliminate or neutralize any traces of the
metals left in the body. The period after which the use of metallic
medicines should be discontinued may differ from metal to metal. In some
metals like iron it is not even necessary to discontinue, while in more
toxic ones like Arsenic, it is advised to skip one day after every six
days. The proper dose of these metallic medicines is very important.
Such medicines therefore should always be taken under the supervision of
an expert who knows all methods to ensure zero toxicity and management
of complications, if any.

When purified/processed properly and used under an expert's guidance,
these metallic medicines are quite safe for internal use. If these
medicines were fatal, it would have been evident in thousands of years
of their use. Historically, Rasa Shastra an offshoot of Ayurveda
developed around the period when Buddha existed (more than 2500 years
ago). Ever since, it has been widely used by Ayurvedic doctors in India
to treat millions of patients. If the metallic preparations were not
safe, more than half of India would have died as a result of taking
these medicines in all these years and this could not have gone
unnoticed. However the findings are totally opposite. These metallic
medicines have been used as wonderful life saving drugs for thousands of
years without any adverse effects.

The use of metals, gems or poisons in medicines as described in
Ayurveda, should not sound scary as the use of dangerous/poisonous
ingredients is involved in all major medical systems including modern
medicine. The contents of antibiotics, steroids, painkillers,
tranquilizers and other chemical medicines are well known to everyone.
Their adverse effects are well documented exactly as of the metallic
medicines documented in ancient Ayurvedic texts. Hundreds of thousand
people die every year or suffer from complications resulting from drug
reactions and surgeries. But we have lots of benefits of modern medicine
and surgery especially during emergency and critical conditions. In
order to get these benefits, we need to take modern medicines even
though we know that they may contain ingredients that can be toxic or
create complications.

It has been noted that metallic Ayurvedic medicines can help patients
who have tried all other medical system and have lost all hope to
recover. That is why they are sometimes called as 'life saving' or
'miracle' medicines. But there can be complications and adverse effects
of these medicines too, especially when these metallic Ayurvedic
medicines are labeled as 'herbal medicine' or supplements and sold
through grocery stores or prescribed by spiritual gurus, yoga teachers,
energy healers and unqualified Ayurvedic practitioners. It is like a
barber performing a 'heart transplant' surgery. That could be really
dangerous as well as scary. Ayurveda is a serious medical system and has
well developed systems of diagnosis and treatments. It is the only
medical system in the world, which has apparatus to deal with complete
human being, which comprises of mind, body and soul.

Ayurveda considers each person to be unique and offers unique
personalized Ayurvedic treatment. Two persons suffering from same
symptoms may receive different treatment. The treatment is personalized
according to the patients physical nature (prakriti), age, immunity,
mind power, habitat etc. A customized diet, life style, exercise,
emotional support, spiritual treatments, breathing and meditations
techniques also form the part of the treatment. Ayurvedic treatments aim
to eradicate the root cause of the disease, which could be located in
the body, mind, environment, family or profession. It needs a proper
qualification and experience for someone to understand and practice
Ayurveda. The only way Ayurvedic medicines can be 'fatal' is when not
taken under the guidance of a qualified doctor. Like modern medicine,
Ayurvedic medicines should not be sold over the counter specially those
containing toxic metals.

To conclude, the presence of toxic metals in Ayurvedic medicines and
their effects have been well documented in various Ayurvedic texts. It
would be interesting to do a research on what do these metallic
medicines do when taken internally. Clinical studies should be done on
people taking metallic medicines by checking their liver, blood and
kidney functions on regular basis. Facts described in Ayurveda texts
like "Bhasms' are just carriers and are eliminated through excretory
systems" should confirmed by doing regular urine and stool analysis for
the person consuming metallic medicines.
If no adverse effects are found, these metallic medicines should be
declared safe and used worldwide for the benefit of millions of those
suffering from incurable diseases.

If medicines are found to have toxic or damaging effects, the
manufacturing processes or the consuming processes have to be checked.
According to facts documented in Ayurvedic texts these are the only two
situations when metallic medicines can cause toxic effects in the body.
It is not Ayurveda, but the manufacturing unit or the doctor/patient
(not following instructions), which is at fault. Every Ayurvedic
principle, treatment, medicine is pro-biotic- supports life and
longevity. Ayurveda is safe, effective and holistic approach to achieve
'eternal health'.

A New Way to Treat Diabetes?
Provided by DrWeil.com

Caiapo (Ipomoea batatas) is a type of white sweet potato, native to the Brazilian Amazon that is traditionally eaten raw as a treatment for anemia, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Japanese immigrants in Brazil have popularized the remedy, and extracts of the root are now sold without prescription in Japan as a food additive for the prevention and care of type 2 diabetes.

Results of a study published in the February 2004 issue of the journal Diabetes Care suggest that Caiapo may, indeed, be a natural way to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. In a study from the University of Vienna Medical School in Austria, a team of researchers randomly assigned a group of 61 patients to receive either a daily dose of 4 grams of Caiapo or a placebo. During the 12-week duration of the study, blood-sugar levels (both fasting and following a glucose tolerance test) decreased significantly among the patients taking the Caiapo. No such changes were seen in the patients taking the placebo. The researchers also found that at the end of treatment, the cholesterol levels among the patients who took Caiapo were lower than those in patients receiving the placebo. A small number of patients reported some mild gastrointestinal distress during the study that might have been a side-effect of the Caiapo, although two of the patients in the placebo group reported similar symptoms.

In an earlier, smaller pilot study the same research team saw the same results. That study included only 18 men and lasted for only six weeks. On the basis of results from these two studies, the researchers concluded that Caiapo seems to be an effective way to lower blood sugar.

To my knowledge, Caiapo isn't available outside of Japan and South Korea, although I'm told that some Japanese suppliers ship orders to foreign countries.

Getting ready for fall, Ayurvedic style ... November 1, 2004: "According to Ayurveda, the transition times between summer and fall, and between winter and spring, are times for cleansing our systems.
This process is called Pancha Karma, meaning 'Five Actions.' The purpose of Pancha Karma in the fall is to remove any excess doshas from our system before we head into winter. "

Secrete of Health -
Whether we have good health or bad health is largely an "inside job." Sure, there are circumstances outside of us that contribute to the quality of our health (e.g. car accidents, polluted ground water, hurricanes, etc.) but, for the most part, our health comes from within. Obviously, the things we choose to put in or on our bodies have major influences on our health. When we choose to eat ice cream and denatured fast foods instead of organic green beans and broccoli, we are making decisions that drag us towards disease. This is, indeed, an inside job because it comes strictly from our personal decisions.

HealthScout-Heart-It's Official: Leeches Are Medical ApplicationsBloodsuckers win FDA nod for treating skin grafts
Naturopathy experts concerned over untrained professionals
Naturopathy experts in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, particularly in Coimbatore, are expressing concern over the mushrooming of a number of unprofessionally managed herbal massage centres.
Most of them have sprung up around tourist spots with tall claims of providing Ayurvedic treatment for all kinds of physical ailments.
"There are some crude methods of practice done in some picnic spots like Kutralam and Okanakkal. Actually when it is done without any physician's supervision or when it is done by an untrained messeur, it increases the invertebral disprolapse, pain or it also proves very harmful for cervical spondylitis patients," said Dr. Uma, an Ayurvedic specialist based in Coimbatore.
Haunted by the toxic side effects of modern drugs, people from across the world flock to India looking for succour from alternative medicinal therapies. Experts, however, caution that there are only a few selective people who understand Ayurveda and the impact of its treatment.

Chicago Public Schools to Ban Soda, Candy

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The Chicago Public Schools will ban soft drinks, candy and fat-laden snacks from school vending machines, replacing them with healthier offerings, district officials said on Tuesday.

Chicago, the nation's third-largest public school district, joins other major school systems that have already expelled food or drinks seen contributing to a childhood obesity epidemic from their facilities.

"Students spend a large portion of their time at school, and we need to do more to promote healthy eating habits," said Arne Duncan, the school system's chief executive officer, in a statement. "This is an important step toward getting junk food out of our schools."

The Chicago district said it is seeking proposals to replace its exclusive and expiring beverage contract with Coca-Cola with offerings restricted to 100 percent fruit juices in elementary schools and at least 50 percent fruit juice in high schools. Other acceptable beverages will be water and noncarbonated sports drinks.

Representatives for Atlanta-based Coke could not immediately be reached for comment. Under the existing contract, the school system made about $4 million a year or 52 percent of the sales, while Coke got the remaining 48 percent, according to Mike Vaughn, a school district spokesman. On the snack front, products in school vending machines must have not more than 30 percent of their calories from fat and no more than 40 percent sugar by weight. Candy and chewing gum would be banned outright.

Vaughn said the new policy on snacks would taken up by the board of education in May with the aim of having the policy in place by next fall. The district's move comes as public awareness over the obesity crisis heightens. Food and drink makers have also tuned into the problem, in part to defend against litigation blaming their products for making people fat. And some nutritionists have cautioned against many of the juice alternatives to soft drinks, which can be deceptively high in sugars.

McDonald's Corp., last year the target of a well-publicized obesity lawsuit, late last week launched an anti-obesity push that includes the launch of a new healthier version of its kid-oriented Happy Meals for adults.

The largest U.S. school system in New York City has already ousted soft drinks, replacing them with juice and other products from Snapple, a unit of Cadbury Schweppes Plc. Schools in Los Angeles banned soft drinks as of January and will ban the sale of so-called junk food starting in July.

WHO To Standardize
Traditional/ Ayurvedic Medicines

Indian Ayurvedic pharmaceuticals will be set on an upward spike on the international sales graph when World Health Organisation's plan to establish the format for standardisation of traditional medicine in health care systems takes shape.

When that happens, the Ayurvedic medicines will also brought under the format of standardisation and validation, which will help Ayurvedic companies sell the medicines in developed markets.

Currently, only Ayurvedic products in food supplements and cosmetics segments are sold in developed markets, while Ayurvedic medicines are yet to enter these highly lucrative markets. Even after getting the validation and standardisation, a prior approval from the US FDA (Food and Drugs Administration) is mandatory for entering these markets.

Already, traditional Chinese medicines have a foothold in the US markets and it is estimated that last year alone Chinese traditional medicines worth over $ 3 billion were sold in the US.

The objective of WHO Strategy for Traditional Medicine for 2002 to 2005 is to discuss the role of traditional medicine in health care systems, current challenges and opportunities and WHO’s role and strategy for traditional medicine.

Though Ayurvedic medicines are widely used in India, there is no valid third party validation here on the properties of these medicines. The WHO format of standardisation will prepare the platform for the initiative.
