Effective Ayurvedic remedies For Heel Pain

Heel pain can be effectively reduced if two Ayurvedic medicated oils – Kottamchukkadi thailam and Sahacharadi thailam – are mixed, heated a little and applied on the heel. ‘Dhara’ of this oil mixture for 20 min. with mild heat would also help.

Ayurvedic medicines For treating Parkinson's disease

Ayurvedic medicines could be more effective than allopathic drugs in treating Parkinson’s disease, according to eminent neuroscientist Dr V.S. Ramachandran.
Dr Ramachandran was selected by Time magazine as one among the 100 most influential persons in the world in 2011.

The Ayurvedic drug Atmagupta or Kapikacchu (macuna pruriensis), a variety of bean rich in L-dopa, was shown in clinical trials to be more effective than allopathic drug-placebo and synthetic L- dopa used to treat Parkinson’s disease.

The excessive presence of an abnormal protein called alpha-synuclein present in the brain regions which are involved in controlling posture, coordination of walking and speech results in the destruction of the cells and the introduction of L-dopa. Dopa that crosses the blood-brain barrier when consumed orally was hailed as a miracle in neurology. However, some patients become wheelchair-bound and the quality of life deteriorates.

Ayurveda-for-diabetes campaign by Centre

New Delhi: Stepping up efforts to fight the spread of diabetes that afflicts 7.29 crore Indians, the Union government is ready with a mega educational campaign ahead of the World Diabetes Day observed on November 14 every year.

Officials said the awareness drive of the Ayush ministry will revolve around the theme ‘The Family and Diabetes’ with a special focus on promoting ayurvedic medicines to fight the disease.

The ministry is planning to work in mission mode to promote traditional medicines to counter diabetes, realising that by 2030 nearly 9 per cent of India’s population is likely to be affected from this chronic, metabolic disease that takes a toll on vital organs and damages tissues.

According to the WHO, diabetes affects approximately 42 crore people worldwide with China topping the list. In 2017, China had 11.43 crore people suffering from diabetes followed by India with 7.29 crore.

Minister of state of Ayush Shripad Naik has said that the government is promoting research in alternative traditional medicines and their integration with modern medicine.

The Ayush ministry has also launched ‘Madhumeha Mission’ — integrating Ayurveda with modern medicine — at health centres across the country.

The WHO has listed 21,000 medicinal plants across the world and out of these 2,500 species are found in India. Nearly 150 species are currently being used commercially for producing medicines.

The Central government has also roped in IIT-Bombay and AIIMS for conducting research to counter allegations that ayurvedic medicines are not effective.

In India, herbs like daruharidra, giloy, gudmar and bitter gourds have been commonly used as anti-diabetic and anti-hyperglycemic agents as these not only target the reason of the disease but also improve a patient’s immunity.

Diet Tips For Rainy season

Finally Monsoons have arrived. Reckless eating during the rains can cause a health problems. The monsoon season reduces the immunity of a human body. It can trigger certain health problems such as allergies, infections, indigestion, hyperacidity, skin disorders and hair fall. Increased humidity during the monsoons can reduce the digestive capacity, and the lack of oxygen in the air can cause breathlessness and general weakness.

What we need during the monsoon months are improved resistance and a robust digestive system. Here are some Ayurvedic diet tips to kindle our digestive fire and boost the immune system.

Ginger and Rock Salt

Ginger is highly valued in Ayurveda for its digestive properties and myriad health benefits. To rouse the sluggish digestive system in the monsoons, Dr. Bhagwati recommends chewing a piece of ginger with some rock salt and a squirt of lemon juice. This activates the digestive process, relieving problems like flatulence, bloating and indigestion.

Drink Rasam With Food

Most of us know rasam as an accompaniment with South Indian meals. The spicy soup-like preparation is made by boiling lentils in a base of tamarind, spices and asafoetida. The real purpose of sipping rasam with food is to improve digestion as you eat. The liquid signals the stomach to produce more digestive acids, preventing flatulence, indigestion, constipation, acidity and bloating.

Go Easy on Salt

Reduce your salt intake this monsoon. Salt causes water retention, which can eventually to high blood pressure. Extreme salty foods like pickles, chutneys, sauces can also cause sluggishness, unnecessary hunger, bloating and hyperacidity.

Eat Astringent, Pungent and Bitter Foods

According to Ayurveda, foods that are astringent, pungent or bitter are ideal for monsoons. Foods that fit into the astringent category are apples, pears, legumes, beans, quinoa, tofu and pomegranate. Pungent foods include ginger, pepper, cloves, horseradish, mustard greens, cardamom and turmeric. Foods with bitter properties are aloe vera, leafy greens, basil, neem and bitter gourd.

Drink Boiled and Purified Water

Waterborne illnesses like jaundice, cholera and typhoid are common during the monsoons. To prevent any such episodes, always insist on drinking boiled and purified water.

Meat Eaters, Go Light

If you are a meat eater, steer clear of oily preparations. Rich meat-based dishes are difficult to digest during the monsoons, which can worsen your health problems. Ideally, stick to a vegetarian diet during the rains. But if you must eat meat, have light preparations like stews and soups.

Drink Herbal Teas

There’s nothing more comforting than a cup of hot tea in the rains. Use spices such as ginger, pepper, mint and basil to supersize the nutritional value of your daily cuppa. These spices boost the immune system, helping your body ward off any infection that could come your way.

Eat Seasonal

Fruits like apples and pears have astringent quality and are recommended for the monsoons. So have as many as you may please. But keep a safe distance from mangoes and eat them in moderation. The king of fruits can aggravate kapha and vata problems, leading to acne.

Avoid Raw Food

Even if you are a weight loss diet, refrain from eating raw vegetables as it can lead to gastric problems. Lightly steaming or boiling them will kill the pathogens, making them safe for consumption during the rains.

Have Easily-Digestible Fats

Certain fats like ghee, sunflower oil, olive oil and corn oil are great during the monsoons since they are easy on the digestive system. Opt for them instead of heavy cooking oils that can upset your stomach.

Fat fighter herb tea

Here’s an ayurvedic fat fighter tea — best made in the morning and sipped warm throughout the day. It includes a combination of ingredients that not only help break down fat, but also helps improve digestion and unblock channels in the body by removing toxins.
Ingredients
1/4 to 1/2 tsp whole cumin seeds
1/4 to 1/2 tsp whole coriander seeds
1/4 to 1/2 tsp whole fennel seeds
5 cups boiling water
Instructions
Boil water in a pot. Add seeds to the water and continue to boil for five minutes with the lid on.
Strain out seeds and pour the tea into a thermos.
Take small sips throughout the day. If you experience any discomfort, reduce seeds to 1/4 teaspoon each for two weeks. Then increase back to 1/2 a teaspoon.

Film on First Indian American Ayurvedic Doctor in the U.S.

A feature-length documentary about Indian American Dr. Vasant Lad, the first person to bring Ayurveda from India to the U.S., has been acquired by Zeitgeist Films and Kino Lorber.
Under the companies’ deal, Zeitgeist will market and release the film theatrically and Kino Lorber will handle home entertainment, adds the report.
According to Zeitgeist Films, “The Doctor From India” will premiere at the 2018 Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
Directed by Jeremy Frindel, the film, titled, “The Doctor From India,” is the fascinating story of Lad’s mission to bring the ancient healthcare system of wellness from India to the West in the late ‘70s.
In this meditative, immersive portrait, with interviewees, including Indian American author and Ayurvedic practitioner Deepak Chopra, Frindel documents the life and work of Lad who, fulfilling his destiny as foretold by his family guru, became a holistic health pioneer, helping to bring Ayurveda, which was almost unknown when he first arrived in the West, to become one of the most prominent alternative health systems in the world today.
A native of India, Lad was a professor of clinical medicine at the Pune University College of Ayurvedic Medicine for 15 years. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Ayurvedic medicine and surgery from the University of Pune and a master’s degree in Ayurvedic science from Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya. Lad’s academic and practical training include the study of Allopathy (western medicine) and surgery as well as traditional Ayurveda.

Ayurvedic herbs to strengthen Immunity in HIV patients

Ayurvedic Treatment of Fibromyalgia

The aggravation of Vata Dosha or accumulation of Ama (toxins) are the primary causes . There is associated weak digestion, constipation, and effects of chronic stress also and that should also be tackled.

The treatment of fibromyalgia, which is primarily a Vātavyadhi disease, focuses on both Vāta Shamana (re-balance) and Samshodhana (purification) along with management of Ama.

Panchakarma therapy: This is the main line of treatment in this disorder and ideally is the initial intervention in fibromyalgia if the patient has no contraindications. Purification measures namely 'Snehan' and 'Swedan' are very effective to balance 'Vata' and helps to dissolve toxins. Medicated oil is applied to the entire body followed by fomentation therapy with herbal decoction. This Snehana and Swedana therapy provides a deeply soothing and balancing effect to Vata. The friction and movements massage creates heat which enhances circulation and helps cleanse the Ama or other impurities that could be aggravating and hypersensitizing nerve tissues. For these purpose –Bala Taila / Ksheerbala Taila / Mahanarayana Taila / Kottamchukadi Taila / Dhanvantara Taila etc can be used. Patients with predominance of Kapha can undergo Vamana by using Madanphala Yoga. Similarly with Pitta aggravation, Virechana can be planned with Trivritta Avaleha, Avipattikara Churna, Eranda oil or Triphala Churna depending on Koshtha. In stress prone individuals who have sleep and mood disturbances, Sirovirechana or Nasya can be planned.
Patients with constipation, debility and other Vata predominant features may undergo Matra Basti or a schedule of Kala or Yoga Basti.

Ayurvedic palliative medicines: If there is pain or stiffness or tenderness-Dashamula Kwath / Dashamularishtam, Rasnadi Guggulu, Yograj Guggulu, Simhanad Guggulu can be prescribed. If pain is associated with fatigue – Rasayana Churna, Chayvanaprasha, Bala Churna, Ashvagandha Churna or Gokshura Churna can be given with milk or water twice or thrice daily. If there is mood swing / sleep disturbances then Mansyadi Kwath with Brahmi Churna + Sankhapusphi Churna + Jatamansi Churna can be prescribed along with other medicines as per requirement.

Yoga Practice:  It is documented that fibromyalgia is often worsened by excessive stress, anxiety and mental fatigue. There are hormonal changes and other biochemical responses to stress that can aggravate the nervous system, and the immune response and affects quality of sleep pattern which in turn aggravates the fibromyalgia syndrome. Various stretching exercises are known to have a positive effect on fibromyalgia. Regular practicing of different yogic postures are helpful. Shavasana (Corpse posture) brings about a relaxed state of mind, Pranayama (Yogic breathing practices) create a state of restful alertness in mind and body.

Diet and nutrition: The diet normally advised for patients of fibromyalgia is a modified Vata-pacifying diet (Pathyam). It should include:
• Vegetable juices and soups prepared  from Guard, bottle guard, carrot, tomato, pumpkin, spinach, beet root.
• Coconut water.
• Kichadi (recipe made by cooking red/bran rice and mung dal.)
• Warm milk with spices like cinnamon, cardamom, ginger and clove
Fibromyalgia patients should avoid the following food articles (Apathyam) and behaviors:
• Hot (spicy) and fried foods; processed, excessive salt or sugar; very bitter and astringent foods, cauliflower, brinjal, potatoes.
• Excessive tea, coffee, alcohol, curd, chocolate, cocoa, milk.
• Sleeping during the day and staying up late at night.
• Mental tensions like worry, anxiety, fear, stress and grief.

Asthma: Effective Home Remedies

According to ‘The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies’ by Dr. Vasant Lad, “The underlying cause of all asthmatic conditions is increased Kapha dosha in stomach. From there it moves into the lungs , trachea and bronchi. The increased kapha blocks the natural flow of air, creating spasm in the bronchial tree and resulting in asthma and wheezing.” Kapha is one of the three energies or doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) responsible for maintaining balance of overall health. Ayurvedic treatments for asthma focus on wiping out the Kapha lodged in the lungs .

Where science stands on - Cinnamon

Diabetes and cholesterol

Biochemist Amy Stockert, who studies cinnamon at Raabe College of Pharmacy at Ohio Northern University co-authored a small study of 18 people with type 2 diabetes that showed the cassia species of cinnamon was more effective than diet alone in lowering blood glucose levels. In fact, her study found that it was comparable to oral diabetes medications.

Another study of 60 people with type 2 diabetes found that small doses of cinnamon reduced blood sugar levels and improved LDL, or "bad" cholesterol, triglycerides and total cholesterol.

Still, if you want to see whether cinnamon works for you, people with type 2 diabetes are advised to do a self-test.

Do some paired blood glucose testing. Use a half a teaspoon in the morning, on fruit or oatmeal or in coffee, and see what happens to your blood sugar levels before and after you eat. Check again two to three hours later and see if there's a difference.

Dementia, HIV, cancer and more

The antioxidant properties of cinnamon are also being studied for their impact on the formation of the plaques and tangles of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. Cinnamaldehyde, a compound responsible for the spice's sweet smell, and epicatechin, a powerful antioxidant that's also in blueberries, red wine and chocolate, seem to offer some protection against the oxidative stress that damages tau, a key player in the development of dementia.

Another study found a component of Ceylon cinnamon to have the same effect. However, research has occurred only in mice, rats and laboratory Petri dishes.

"It appears to work as an anti-inflammatory or antioxidant, protecting the body on a cellular level from bad things that happen," Wright said, "by getting rid of waste products and keeping the cells healthy."

Cinnamon and other traditional Indian medicinal plants are also being tested in the fight against HIV. One study found that green tea, elderberry and some extracts of cinnamon rich in flavonoids blocked the virus from entering and infecting certain cells.


The research on cinnamon doesn't stop there. Ceylon cinnamon has also been associated with cancer-fighting properties in rodents, anti-parasitic effects, improved diabetic neuropathy, lower blood pressure and wound healing, including liver damage. Studies have shown that solutions of cinnamon oil can kill a number of common bacteria, such as streptococcus and E. coli. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health is investigating cinnamon's impact on multiple sclerosis.

Using a computer model, biochemist Stockert found that cinnamon was as effective as resveratrol, an antioxidant in red wine known for anti-aging and disease-fighting properties, in activating SIRT-1 -- also known as the longevity gene because of its role in repairing DNA.

Ayurveda's Healthy eating guidelines

Here are Ayurvedic recommendations -

1.Chew your food until it is an even consistency before swallowing your food.

2.Do not eat while you’re being distracted due to television, conversation or reading.

3.Avoid drinking cold water before eating. This can hamper the process of digestion.

4.Do not drink cold drinks during meals, as it can weaken the digestive fire. A half cup of normal water is fine. Dry meals require more water. Sipping wine during meals is fine.

5.It is said that food prepared with love and care is known to pass on an energy to us. It is said that we must avoid food prepared with resentment. We not only take in the food but also the emotions of the maker, as per ayurveda.

6.You need to consider eating as a sacred thing. You need to pause, relax and be calm before starting to consume your food.

7.After your meal, you need to give yourself a break. You need to pause for a moment and relax before heading to the next activity.

8.You need to eat at a moderate pace until your stomach is three quarters full.

9.You need to give a time period of three hours between each meal to allow your food to be digested properly.

10.Digestion is known to be the strongest when the sun is at its peak. The rhythm of the body mirrors that of the universe. Hence, it is recommended to eat your largest meal at noon and a lighter on at night and in the morning.

11.You need to take all your drinks and water when it is at room temperature. This is because cold drinks can weaken the digestive fire and hence weaken your digestion process.

12.Those people with the Vata nature or imbalance should eat four to five times per day. Again you need to keep in mind the gap of three-four hours between the meals and have meals in smaller quantities.

13.Eat a fresh piece of ginger and lemon or pomegranate chutney before a full meal to balance the Pitta in your body.

14.Drinking lassi with or after lunch is effective for digestion. This is one of the rules of healthy eating as recommended in Ayurveda.

15.As per ayurveda, it is said that dinner must be completed before 8 PM and must always be lighter in quantity.

Punarnava - Herbal remedy for Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C is an infectious disease caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). The virus spreads through blood-to-blood contact, and is usually associated with the use of intravenous drug use, blood donations and other unhygienic use of medical equipment leading to exchange of blood. Once infected, a patient can go years without facing severe symptoms, like liver failure and cirrhosis, only to feel it’s accumulated effects after a long period. HCV affects over 8 million people in the country and has been a cause of major cause for concern.Now, a new class of drug resistant strand of HCV have emerged making the situation worse.

A group of scientists from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have now come up with a possible deterrent to the virus, derived from a common herb used to relieve pain. Boerhavia diffusa is a flowering plant and a common ingredient in many ayurvedic medicine, with the plant commonly referred to as a Punarnava, something that rejuvenates the body. Now, with their new study, the scientists have identified dehydrorotenoid boeravinone H, a compound found in the plant, as a possible inhibitor of the HCV virus. The study showed that the presence of the compound inhibiting the entry and binding of particles like HCV, with no noticeable side-effects. Although researchers are still studying as to how exactly the compound inhibits HCV growth, the result could be used to develop a new class of drugs to fight the drug resistant HCV’s. The herbs that were prescribed by our elders may have had some truth after all.

Ashwagandha: Ayurvedic Herb to Treat Insomnia

A recent study suggests the ancient Indian herb,Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), can promote sound sleep. After India’s Patent Win, US Pharmaceuticals Suddenly Claim that Turmeric has no Medicinal Properties

In 1997 the Indian Government won a major victory to prevent US firms from patenting Turmeric’s medicinal properties.. and now suddenly a “new study” finds that turmeric is not useful for making medicines. This clearly shows that the pharmaceutical industry is out to make money .. not cures.
In 1995 , two American researchers of the University of Mississippi Medical Center, put a claim to the US Patent and Trademark Office, maintaining that they had discovered haldi‘s healing properties. And, surprise, they were granted a patent in March 1995 for something you had known for years and our ayurveda for centuries.

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research applied to the US Patent Office for a reexamination. This was after Indian scientists shouted from rooftops about how we are losing our traditional knowledge to marauding foreign companies who have started poaching on our ancient healing techniques. The US Patent Office in 1997 acknowledged it had made a mistake and cancelled the patent on turmeric. This is a major victory because seldom does it fully revoke a patent it has granted.

But now a new study says “In a new review of chemical evidence, scientists write that curcumin is an “unstable, reactive, non-bioavailable compound and, therefore, a highly improbable lead [for drug development].”   The article concludes that “The resources being wasted on difficult curcumin research could instead be spent on thousands of other chemicals lying on shelves waiting to be tested”   (Meaning you could research stuff  off which we can make more money!)

Ayurvedic anticancer drug showing promise in trials

Research on the effect of an ayurvedic drug on cancer has shown promising results in tests on mice, said pathologist Dr Vinod Shidham, who is currently working in the USA.
Currently, Dr Shidham is part of a unique research for cancer treatment using an ayurvedic medicine called 'Rohitak'. He said, "The medicine has been tested on mice for treating prostate cancer with good results; we plan to perform similar method for pancreatic cancer treatment."
He said, "Any tumour cell requires blood supply, without which it will die. Initially, we took out malignant tissue and allowed the tumour to grow. Then, using an ayurvedic medicine named 'Rohitak' on a tissue, we observed that the medicine does not kill the tumour but it is shrinking the blood vessels that pass through it. With no blood supply, the tumour dies."
Dr Shidham said, "Once we are able to get successful results on pancreatic cancer, we will be looking forward to perform clinical trials to get the treatment into mainstream." He added, "If India starts to perform such clinical trials, the cancer scenario will improve."

Turmeric-laced ‘Golden milk’ - the newest health drink

A detoxifying drink used in traditional Indian medicine, golden milk owes its name to the bright yellow color of turmeric. Mixed with warming spices like cinnamon, pepper and ginger, this sugar-free and antioxidant drink is a pleasant alternative to coffee, or Christmas season staples mulled wine and hot chocolate.

Known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties, turmeric activates the happiness hormone, serotonin. The ochre-coloured root is also a standard ingredient in Indian cuisines.

In combination with pepper and ginger, turmeric is the key ingredient in golden milk, an Ayurvedic-inspired medicinal drink that promotes good digestion and detoxifies the body. It is made by forming a paste of water, turmeric and pepper, which is then combined with coconut, soy or almond milk, along with a dash of coconut oil or cold-pressed extra-virgin olive oil. Honey or cinnamon are added for extra flavor and sweetness.

Easy to prepare, this hot, sweet, milky drink is not only tasty, but also healthy, especially in the winter months when its warming spices give it a Christmassy flavor.

The latest health food trend, the drink is all the rage on Instagram. It has also been hailed as an elixir by “clean eating” celebrities and health bloggers.

A gramme of turmeric every morning could improve the memories of people at risk of cognitive impairment, according to researchers at the Monash Asia Institute in Melbourne, Australia. At the same time, an American study has found that a combination of turmeric and silymarin (milk thistle extract), a traditional remedy for liver complaints, could help prevent colon cancer.

Now, ayurveda treatment gets insurance cover

In a major push to the Indian traditional systems of treatment, the Central government has agreed to extend insurance coverage to ayurvedic therapy as well.
The ayush ministry has also issued guidelines for claiming insurance for the ayurvedic therapies.
According to the ministry, the guidelines have been framed after consulting the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) as well as 23 insurance companies and ayurveda experts and industry representatives.
Only a few government companies were providing insurance coverage for select ayurvedic treatments,
It was for the first time that so many private insurance companies have come forward to provide insurance coverage to about 20 ayurvedic treatment procedures.
In the ministry's guidelines, the standard costs that can be claimed for various therapeutic procedures and the duration of treatments have been broadly listed.
The guidelines clarify that the insurance coverage will be provided to treatments carried out in ayurvedic hospitals registered with a government authority.
The hospitals must have at least 15 beds, and five registered ayurvedic doctors as well as adequate number of qualified paramedical staff. The hospitals must also be maintaining the daily medical records.

Mobile App to help diabetic patients with ayurvedic medicines

Soon, people with diabetes will be able to find out what ayurvedic medicines to take to check their rising blood glucose levels. As part of its 'Mission Madhumeha' launched last month, the government is set to launch a mobile app which will suggest ayurvedic medicines for diabetic patients.

The app will be meant for use by both practitioners of ayurveda as well patients. It will help in identifying the type of diabetes a patient is suffering from as well as recommend which ayurvedic medicines can be administered to a patient, says Manoj Nesari, Adviser to AYUSH Ministry. The app is based on a set of guidelines issued by AYUSH ministry last month called "Protocol for Prevention and Control of Diabetes through Ayurveda".The protocol also includes a list of fruits and vegetables a diabetic patient should or should not eat. It also recommends an active lifestyle, physical exercise, yoga in order to avoid falling prey to diabetes.

There is also an assessment tool which has been developed to help a diabetic person know if it is time to visit a doctor for a checkup. A national protocol for treating diabetes through ayurveda was unveiled last month on National Ayurveda Day observed on October 28.

Ashtavarga herbs in Chyavanprash

Pharmaceutical industry analysts have estimated that about 15,500 tonnes of Chyavanprash was sold across the country last year. Children and adults consume the product which is promoted as a remedy against cold, cough and respiratory infections among other health disorders.


The primary ingredient of Chyavanprash is amla, or gooseberry. The original texts of Ayurveda list thirty-eight herbs as ingredients of Chyavanprash, but most commercial formulations now use substitute herbs, including extracts of the eight plants named in traditional medicine as kakoli, kshirkakoli, jeevak, rishbhak, meda, mahameda, riddhi and vriddhi.These are collectively called ashtavarga and are believed to increase the anti-oxidant activity of amla.

"A 10th century commentary on the ayurveda text Charak Samhita specifically mentions alternatives if the ashtavarga are not available," said J.L.N. Sastry, head of ayurveda research at Dabur India, a company that manufactures traditional remedies, including Chyavanprash.

Scientists at the IIIM have already acquired three of the eight plants - jeevak, mahameda and rishbhak - and are trying to use plant tissue culture technology to grow them in the laboratory's greenhouse. Plant biologists from the IIIM are also collaborating with scientists in other academic institutions and local communities in the Himalayan region, and in parts of northern and northeastern India to look for the other five species.

Though Chyavanprash has been used for centuries, some scientists say that its therapeutic benefits still need to be rigorously assessed. A review of clinical studies involving Chyavanprash published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology in August this year had found that while several studies have shown improvements in health status and immunity, most such studies have involved small samples of patients and short periods of observations.

Diabetes camps Now Offer Ayurveda, allopathy mix treatment

Patients at government hospitals can now choose between ayurveda or allopathy or a combination of both to treat certain ailments. From October 24 to November 14, 2016

Maharashtra state is set to hold massive screening camps in all the 36 districts for diabetes and use ayurveda. Ayurveda has recently become popular in government hospitals for treating kidney stones, arthritis, cardio-vascular ailments and urinary problems. For diseases that require non-surgical intervention and can be handled easily, medical officers have started referring patients to BAMS doctors.

ANTI-DIABETIC AYURVEDIC DRUG: BGR-34

“The traditional knowledge from ayurveda is certainly valuable for discovering new drugs for diabetes,” Bhushan Patwardhan, professor of health sciences at Pune University said, adding: “But it should be based on scientific evidence for safety, quality and efficacy”, which is absent in the case of BGR-34.
In contrast, he said, discovery of artemisinin from traditional Chinese medicine — which has become a drug of choice for treatment of malaria and got its inventor a Nobel Prize — required over three decades of rigorous scientific work.
“India needs to follow the robust path of discoveries like reserpine (derived from the sarpagandha Indian snakeroot), used to treat high blood pressure and not succumb to cheap publicity or short-term economic gains that will eventually erode the credibility of India’s traditional knowledge heritage,” Patwardhan said.
“At the same time, government regulations, oversight and surveillance is required to ensure that gullible patients are not exploited by misleading commercial advertisements promoting various products by making unrealistic claims,” he added.
According to Patwardhan, BGR-34 is not the first ayurvedic diabetic drug to be commercialised without scientific validation. He says no published scientific papers are available regarding Ayush-82 — another anti-diabetic drug — developed by the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences under the Ayush Ministry and commercialised recently. 'Papaya extract tablet boosts immunity, can't cure dengue'

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation on Thursday said that it will distribute pills made of papaya extract near public gardens and various urban and public health centres. The civic body will distribute the pills made of herbal concoction for free.

However, Ayurvedic doctors claim that these pills only help boost immunity and are not a sure shot cure for dengue. While the tablets are available over the counter, they are very expensive.

There are a number of cures for fever in ayurveda. "Consumption of bitter substances such as the extract of giloy or tinospora cordifoila, generally help cure fever. Giloy is useful in strengthening the immune system and builds up the body's defense against infections.

Ayurveda to undergo clinical trials before hitting market

Ayurvedic and other alternative medicines openly sold without any regulations in India would soon need to undergo a strict procedure of research and clinical trials before hitting the market.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), under its Draft National Ethical Guidelines for Biomedical and Health Research involving Human Participants, 2016, has proposed that in a bid to ensure patient safety and efficacy, there should be proper research and clinical trials on these drugs.

“Though Traditional Systems of medicine (termed Complementary and Alternate Systems in the West) are known for their long history of safe and effective use, validation of safety and efficacy using scientific and evidence-based methodologies is needed for the purpose of universal acceptability, gaining confidence of practitioners and satisfaction of end users in the products,” said Dr Soumya Swaminathan, Director General, ICMR and Secretary, Department of Health Research (DHR), Union Health Ministry.
