Ayurveda On The Rise

Ayurvedic medicine tradition is more than 5,000-years-old, and herbal medicines remain an essential component of its practice. Today, the populations of certain countries still depend on herbal medicines as a panacea to their healthcare needs. With increasing awareness of ill after-effects of allopathic medicines, there is a huge global demand for natural/herbal medicines.

Ayurveda is highly effective in common and complicated ailments, and assures long-term relief with no side effects. Ayurvedic herbs like ashwagandha, brahmi, guggulu and many others, are well-known globally for their medicinal properties. As Ayurveda is recognized to be the foremost life science and describes ways to prevent and manage lifestyle disorders, the world is being attracted towards its potential. Many universities in India and abroad have started diploma courses in Ayurveda and allied subjects. This indicates the growing popularity as well as the acceptance of Ayurveda by the international societies too. The medical community is beginning to lay emphasis on ‘preventive care’ rather than post manifestation of diseases. The management of diseases with modern medicine is getting increasingly difficult owing to the ‘drug resistant’ strains of bacteria. This is a huge area of concern for scientists working in the healthcare arena.

One of the major strengths of Ayurveda is the basket of immuno-modulator herbs with established activity, duly accepted by modern scientists. Similarly, the other category of herbs called ‘Rasayana’ in Ayurveda, possess rejuvenating properties and are targeted towards different organs to tone up the system and ensure function smoothly.

Ayurvedic drugs have literally stood the test of time. It has been the main stay health care system in India before the advent of modern drugs in early 19th century. Generations have benefited, got cured and passed on the remedies to the next generation with confidence and pride. There cannot be a bigger and better example than the good old Chyawanprash.

Ayurvedic Herbs ideal for Cosmetic Care

Ayurveda has found a prominent place in modern cosmetic care. Treatments that were lost in the midst of time have been revived and viewed in the light of modern scientific techniques. Today the holistic system of Ayurveda has become popular worldwide. Herbal and natural extracts have been formulated into different products for skin, hair and body care, using the latest scientific techniques.

An important advantage is the lack of harmful side-effects. Synthetic preparations and chemical ingredients, on the other hand, can cause allergic and irritation. They can also cause a build-up of toxins in the system, over a period of time.

Herbs have been used in Ayurvedic treatments to cleanse the skin of toxins and wastes. The safety factor makes herbs ideal for cosmetic care. Herbs have powerful healing properties and many benefits for skin and hair care. They have definite protective, preventive and corrective actions.  Herbs help improve the normal functions of the skin and scalp, including that of cell renewal. Thus, they have the power to revitalize and rejuvenate.

Another important benefit of using herbs is that they help to restore the normal balance- that has been disturbed due to air pollutants, chlorinated water, alkaline soaps, and make-up. Synthetic and chemical ingredients in cosmetic preparations disrupt the normal balance. When the normal pH balance is disturbed, it results in skin and hair problems. So, our regular skin and hair care routine should be such that helps to restore the acid-alkaline balance.
Most natural ingredients have properties that help in beauty care, while some are powerful cleansers, others are excellent moisturisers. Some improve blood circulation, and others tighten the skin. By and large, organic ingredients have preserving, preventive and rejuvenating powers and are readily accepted and assimilated by the body.

For example, ingredients like sandalwood, basil (tulsi), mint (pudina), neem (margosa) can be used to treat eruptive conditions of the skin, like acne.

After India’s Patent Win, US Pharmaceuticals Suddenly Claim that Turmeric has no Medicinal Properties

In 1997 the Indian Government won a major victory to prevent US firms from patenting Turmeric’s medicinal properties.. and now suddenly a “new study” finds that turmeric is not useful for making medicines. This clearly shows that the pharmaceutical industry is out to make money .. not cures.
In 1995 , two American researchers of the University of Mississippi Medical Center, put a claim to the US Patent and Trademark Office, maintaining that they had discovered haldi‘s healing properties. And, surprise, they were granted a patent in March 1995 for something you had known for years and our ayurveda for centuries.

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research applied to the US Patent Office for a reexamination. This was after Indian scientists shouted from rooftops about how we are losing our traditional knowledge to marauding foreign companies who have started poaching on our ancient healing techniques. The US Patent Office in 1997 acknowledged it had made a mistake and cancelled the patent on turmeric. This is a major victory because seldom does it fully revoke a patent it has granted.

But now a new study says “In a new review of chemical evidence, scientists write that curcumin is an “unstable, reactive, non-bioavailable compound and, therefore, a highly improbable lead [for drug development].”   The article concludes that “The resources being wasted on difficult curcumin research could instead be spent on thousands of other chemicals lying on shelves waiting to be tested”   (Meaning you could research stuff  off which we can make more money!)

Ayurvedic anticancer drug showing promise in trials

Research on the effect of an ayurvedic drug on cancer has shown promising results in tests on mice, said pathologist Dr Vinod Shidham, who is currently working in the USA.
Currently, Dr Shidham is part of a unique research for cancer treatment using an ayurvedic medicine called 'Rohitak'. He said, "The medicine has been tested on mice for treating prostate cancer with good results; we plan to perform similar method for pancreatic cancer treatment."
He said, "Any tumour cell requires blood supply, without which it will die. Initially, we took out malignant tissue and allowed the tumour to grow. Then, using an ayurvedic medicine named 'Rohitak' on a tissue, we observed that the medicine does not kill the tumour but it is shrinking the blood vessels that pass through it. With no blood supply, the tumour dies."
Dr Shidham said, "Once we are able to get successful results on pancreatic cancer, we will be looking forward to perform clinical trials to get the treatment into mainstream." He added, "If India starts to perform such clinical trials, the cancer scenario will improve."

Turmeric-laced ‘Golden milk’ - the newest health drink

A detoxifying drink used in traditional Indian medicine, golden milk owes its name to the bright yellow color of turmeric. Mixed with warming spices like cinnamon, pepper and ginger, this sugar-free and antioxidant drink is a pleasant alternative to coffee, or Christmas season staples mulled wine and hot chocolate.

Known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties, turmeric activates the happiness hormone, serotonin. The ochre-coloured root is also a standard ingredient in Indian cuisines.

In combination with pepper and ginger, turmeric is the key ingredient in golden milk, an Ayurvedic-inspired medicinal drink that promotes good digestion and detoxifies the body. It is made by forming a paste of water, turmeric and pepper, which is then combined with coconut, soy or almond milk, along with a dash of coconut oil or cold-pressed extra-virgin olive oil. Honey or cinnamon are added for extra flavor and sweetness.

Easy to prepare, this hot, sweet, milky drink is not only tasty, but also healthy, especially in the winter months when its warming spices give it a Christmassy flavor.

The latest health food trend, the drink is all the rage on Instagram. It has also been hailed as an elixir by “clean eating” celebrities and health bloggers.

A gramme of turmeric every morning could improve the memories of people at risk of cognitive impairment, according to researchers at the Monash Asia Institute in Melbourne, Australia. At the same time, an American study has found that a combination of turmeric and silymarin (milk thistle extract), a traditional remedy for liver complaints, could help prevent colon cancer.

Now, ayurveda treatment gets insurance cover

In a major push to the Indian traditional systems of treatment, the Central government has agreed to extend insurance coverage to ayurvedic therapy as well.
The ayush ministry has also issued guidelines for claiming insurance for the ayurvedic therapies.
According to the ministry, the guidelines have been framed after consulting the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) as well as 23 insurance companies and ayurveda experts and industry representatives.
Only a few government companies were providing insurance coverage for select ayurvedic treatments,
It was for the first time that so many private insurance companies have come forward to provide insurance coverage to about 20 ayurvedic treatment procedures.
In the ministry's guidelines, the standard costs that can be claimed for various therapeutic procedures and the duration of treatments have been broadly listed.
The guidelines clarify that the insurance coverage will be provided to treatments carried out in ayurvedic hospitals registered with a government authority.
The hospitals must have at least 15 beds, and five registered ayurvedic doctors as well as adequate number of qualified paramedical staff. The hospitals must also be maintaining the daily medical records.

Ashtavarga herbs in Chyavanprash

Pharmaceutical industry analysts have estimated that about 15,500 tonnes of Chyavanprash was sold across the country last year. Children and adults consume the product which is promoted as a remedy against cold, cough and respiratory infections among other health disorders.

The primary ingredient of Chyavanprash is amla, or gooseberry. The original texts of Ayurveda list thirty-eight herbs as ingredients of Chyavanprash, but most commercial formulations now use substitute herbs, including extracts of the eight plants named in traditional medicine as kakoli, kshirkakoli, jeevak, rishbhak, meda, mahameda, riddhi and vriddhi. These are collectively called ashtavarga and are believed to increase the anti-oxidant activity of amla.

"A 10th century commentary on the ayurveda text Charak Samhita specifically mentions alternatives if the ashtavarga are not available," said J.L.N. Sastry, head of ayurveda research at Dabur India, a company that manufactures traditional remedies, including Chyavanprash.

Scientists at the IIIM have already acquired three of the eight plants - jeevak, mahameda and rishbhak - and are trying to use plant tissue culture technology to grow them in the laboratory's greenhouse. Plant biologists from the IIIM are also collaborating with scientists in other academic institutions and local communities in the Himalayan region, and in parts of northern and northeastern India to look for the other five species.

Though Chyavanprash has been used for centuries, some scientists say that its therapeutic benefits still need to be rigorously assessed. A review of clinical studies involving Chyavanprash published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology in August this year had found that while several studies have shown improvements in health status and immunity, most such studies have involved small samples of patients and short periods of observations.

ANTI-DIABETIC AYURVEDIC DRUG: BGR-34

“The traditional knowledge from ayurveda is certainly valuable for discovering new drugs for diabetes,” Bhushan Patwardhan, professor of health sciences at Pune University said, adding: “But it should be based on scientific evidence for safety, quality and efficacy”, which is absent in the case of BGR-34.
In contrast, he said, discovery of artemisinin from traditional Chinese medicine — which has become a drug of choice for treatment of malaria and got its inventor a Nobel Prize — required over three decades of rigorous scientific work.
“India needs to follow the robust path of discoveries like reserpine (derived from the sarpagandha Indian snakeroot), used to treat high blood pressure and not succumb to cheap publicity or short-term economic gains that will eventually erode the credibility of India’s traditional knowledge heritage,” Patwardhan said.
“At the same time, government regulations, oversight and surveillance is required to ensure that gullible patients are not exploited by misleading commercial advertisements promoting various products by making unrealistic claims,” he added.
According to Patwardhan, BGR-34 is not the first ayurvedic diabetic drug to be commercialised without scientific validation. He says no published scientific papers are available regarding Ayush-82 — another anti-diabetic drug — developed by the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences under the Ayush Ministry and commercialised recently. Ayurveda to undergo clinical trials before hitting market

Ayurvedic and other alternative medicines openly sold without any regulations in India would soon need to undergo a strict procedure of research and clinical trials before hitting the market.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), under its Draft National Ethical Guidelines for Biomedical and Health Research involving Human Participants, 2016, has proposed that in a bid to ensure patient safety and efficacy, there should be proper research and clinical trials on these drugs.

“Though Traditional Systems of medicine (termed Complementary and Alternate Systems in the West) are known for their long history of safe and effective use, validation of safety and efficacy using scientific and evidence-based methodologies is needed for the purpose of universal acceptability, gaining confidence of practitioners and satisfaction of end users in the products,” said Dr Soumya Swaminathan, Director General, ICMR and Secretary, Department of Health Research (DHR), Union Health Ministry.

There are No Toxins in ayurvedic drugs, say experts

With the campaign against the ayurvedic drugs gaining strength in the West because of the presence of toxic metals, it is time to scientifically prove before the world that the toxicity of the heavy metals is eliminated in the process of preparing ayurvedic medicines, said the experts.
"Scientific studies and clinical have clearly proved that the toxicity of the heavy metals will not be there once it is processed, and in ayurveda mercury is an ingredient, and not a contaminator," said Dr P M Warrier, chief superintendent, Aryavaidyasala Kottakkal, delivering the keynote address at a workshop on 'Standardization of kashayam' organized by Itoozhi Illam Ayurveda Charitable Trust in association with CARe Keralam, a public limited firm established with the support of AYUSH department of government of India here on Friday.
As per a study conducted by IIT, Kharagpur, the heavy metals in ayurvedic bhasmas are in the form of nano particles and there is no toxicity in it and it gets excreted from the body, he said.

Heavy metals in Ayurvedic herbs and traditional Ayurvedic formulations

The heavy metal contamination of ayurvedic medicines is a much talked - about subject these days. The controversy began with the publication of Saper et al in Journal of American Medical Association Volume 292: pages 2868-2873 in 2004. They collected some herbo-mineral preparations from Boston area and analyzed the heavy metal content.  These products were prepared with inorganic substances like arsenic, mercury etc and therefore, their presence was not at all surprising.  However, Saper et al misconstrued  the data and asserted that all ayurvedic medicines are toxic. This paper was followed by many others reporting that Ayurvedic medicines are loaded with heavy metals. These reports were given global publicity through Western print media, TV channels, radio stations and the internet.
The publicity campaign was so successful that now even Ayurvedic physicians believe that ayurvedic medicines contain heavy metals!

Almost all these studies were based on information obtained from ayurvedic medicines prepared from calcined metals and inorganic substances like mercury, arsenic sulphide, antimony and so on. No information is available on the content of heavy metals in traditional ayurvedic medicines prepared exclusively from herbs. Twelve years have elapsed and not even one CSIR institute or the Bureau of Indian Standards had the thoughtfulness to carry out a dispassionate enquiry into the so-called presence of lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury in traditional ayurvedic formulations prepared exclusively using herbs. A small band of researchers in CARe Keralam Ltd,  an Ayurveda consortium in Chalakudi, Kerala, India has finally published a research paper in Aryavaidyan (Volume 28, No.2, published by Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal) demonstrating that 126 ayurvedic formulations produced by 32 companies and 34 common ayurvedic herbs collected from all geographical regions of India contained these heavy metals in quantities well below the limits set by Government of India.

Interestingly, this pro-Ayurveda study was conducted by these non-Ayurveda persons.

Bottle Gourd for Weight Reduction

This humble vegetable is often ignored and not given its due in our culinary diary. It is also known as calabash or opo squash. It is an amazing vegetable with high water content. It can be taken as a cooked vegetable or as juice.
Popularly known as Lauki in India, it is easily digestible and has amazing medicinal properties too. It cools the body and acts as a hydrating agent. Due to a high rate of metabolism, food gets digested quickly and there is no accumulation of fat in the body. Thus, it aids in weight loss indirectly. Bottle gourd juice should not be filtered, as it will result in the loss of fibre and valuable nutrients. Also, never mix bottle gourd juice with the juice of any other vegetable.

Herbal Medicine to Heal your Thyroid

There are many herbal thyroid boosters that can help regulate the thyroid gland. There are also some herbs that may not directly balance the thyroid but may help alleviate symptoms of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.

The following herbs are regarded as good natural support for the thyroid.

1. Bladderwrack: also known as the seaweed fucus, is a form of kelp that has been used medicinally for centuries. The main use of the herb has been for the stimulation of the thyroid gland as a treatment for obesity and cellulite. The high iodine content of the herb stimulates thyroid function which boosts metabolism.

2. Guggul: This Ayurvedic herb has been studied for decades for its pro-thyroid properties. It enhances enzymatic activity in the thyroid and helps the gland to use iodine. In addition, it helps convert thyroid hormone T4 to its more bio-active partner T3.

3. Ashwagandha: Chronic stress puts strain on the all-important HPA (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal) system, which results in suppressed thyroid function. Ashwagandha takes strain off the pituitary and hypothalamus, thereby stimulating thyroid activity.

MORE THAN HALF ALLOPATHIC DOCS PRESCRIBE AYURVEDIC MEDICINES!

If you are dependent on Ayurvedic medicines prescribed by your allopath, then you better think again before taking your next dose. Your doctor is as ignorant about Ayurvedic medicines as you are.

A study by the pharmacology department of KEM hospital has revealed that most of the allopaths who prefer prescribing Ayurvedic medicines for ailments like liver disorder, arthritis, cough and cold, kidney stones and piles, have very little knowledge about Ayurvedic medicines.

According to the study, 99% of the resident doctors did not even learn the basics of Ayurveda but 67% of them prescribe Ayurvedic medicines to their patients.

The study states that the commonly prescribed proprietary Ayurvedic medicines were Liv 52 (39%), Shatavari (13%), Cystone (12%) and common ailments for which these medicines prescribed were liver disorders (34%), arthritis (18%), cough and cold (13%), kidney stones (11%), and piles (10%).

However, while allopaths prescribe Ayurvedic medicines, they don’t show any inclination towards learning about the medicines. “At least 90% of these doctors basically rely on the reputation and credibility of the manufacturer, instead of knowing the content of the medicines. This is what needs to be changed.

Buttermilk — a Versatile Drink

There’s is a simile about Buttermilk: What Nectar is for the gods , buttermilk is for human beings.

In Ayurvedic medicine, Buttermilk, or “takra" or "chaas” is used as a medicine to maintain health as well as treat disease. Buttermilk improves digestion, treats digestive disorders and other gastro-intestinal disorders. It treats inflammation, , spleen and liver disorders and is also beneficial in anemia. It can be taken instead of an antacid as it fights acidity in the stomach. It also helps with acid reflex after meals as it cools the stomach and soothes any irritation.

After eating a spicy meal such as curry, buttermilk soothes the stomach lining. It also washes down oil, butter and ghee. So, grab the buttermilk before you grab your antacid.

Generally, in the treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, the use of Buttermilk ( takra) is emphasized. The patient has to be kept on the diet of buttermilk, which is the treatment and nutrition in IBS. Ayurvedic Herb- Gokshura - an Excellent Aphrodisiac

Gokshura is widely used in Ayurveda to boost libido as it is an aphrodisiac. A study published in the Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine says that Gokshura (gokhru) can improve fertility. It also says that it can improve sperm count and motility. One of the important properties that make gokhru an aphrodisiac is the fact that it boosts testosterone levels and hence improves libido.

The whole plant is full of biologically active compounds, and every part of it has different health benefits.
Its fruit is rich in alkaloids, resins, saponins and certain aromatic oils.
The stem contains phytosterols, alkaloids such as harman, tannins and carbohydrates.
The roots and leaves contain flavonoids, alkaloids, resins and proteins.
All these active compounds are responsible for its different health benefits.

Apart from being used as an aphrodisiac, gokhru can also be used to improve kidney and liver function and treat urinary diseases. It is known to control blood pressure levels as it has cholesterol-lowering properties.
Method of using Gokshura
Various Gokhru supplements are easily available in Ayurvedic medicine shop.

This Ancient Ayurvedic Plant May Be The World’s Most Important Herb

Sayer Ji from Greenmedinfo explains just why turmeric is so miraculous:

Indeed, turmeric turns the entire drug-based medical model on its head.  Instead of causing far more side effects than therapeutic ones, as is the case for most patented pharmaceutical medications, turmeric possesses hundreds of potential side benefits, having been empirically demonstrated to positively modulate over 160 different physiological pathways in the mammalian body.

While no food or herb is right for everyone, and everything has the potential for unintended, adverse side effects, turmeric is truly unique in its exceptionally high margin of safety vis-à-vis the drugs it has been compared with, e.g. hydrocortisone, ibuprofen, chemotherapy agents. Furthermore, nothing within the modern-day pharmaceutical armamentarium comes even remotely close to turmeric’s 6,000 year track record of safe use in Ayurvedic medicine.

There are over 600 potential health benefits of turmeric, and/or its primary polyphenol known as Curcumin. These can be viewed on a turmeric research  page

ZIKA virus

Zika virus is spread to people through mosquito bites. The most common symptoms of Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting from several days to a week. Severe disease requiring hospitalization is uncommon.

Symptoms

About 1 in 5 people infected with Zika virus become ill (i.e., develop Zika).
The most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain, or conjunctivitis (red eyes). Other common symptoms include muscle pain and headache. The incubation period (the time from exposure to symptoms) for Zika virus disease is not known, but is likely to be a few days to a week.
The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting for several days to a week.
People usually don’t get sick enough to go to the hospital, and they very rarely die of Zika.
Zika virus usually remains in the blood of an infected person for about a week but it can be found longer in some people.

Treatment

-- There is no vaccine to prevent or specific medicine to treat Zika infections.
-- Treat the symptoms:
-- Get plenty of rest.
-- Drink fluids to prevent dehydration.
-- Take medicine such as acetaminophen (Tylenol®) to relieve fever and pain.
-- Do not take aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Aloe vera – An agricultural option

Of late, because of skyrocketing prices of allopathic medicines with its known side effects, medicinal plants and ayurvedic medicines are becoming popular.

According to research the world trade on these medicines is worth about $80 million now and this is likely to increase by 35-40 percent within five years. USA dominates the market (65%) while India and China have a share of 10 percent each which could be enhanced by its commercial cultivation. With increasing interest in ‘natural’ products across the world and the resultant upsurge in the demand for medicinal plants, this trade is expected to grow up to $5 trillion by the year 2050.

Aloe Vera is among the few medicinal plants by virtue of their extensive medicinal, nutraceutical and other uses, enjoys a major chunk of the market across the globe. The major markets for Aloe Vera and its extracts are Australia, US and the entire Europe.

Aloe Vera is a plant of great potential and value in the field of therapeutic pharmaceuticals and cosmetic industries, and in Ayurvedic and Unani system of medicines, it is particularly useful for treatment of burns, bleeding wounds, as eye drops for sore eyes. The gel contained in Aloe Vera leaves reportedly comprises 75 nutrients, 200 active compounds, 20 minerals, 18 amino acids and 12 vitamins.

It contains 200 different types of polysaccharides, and various kinds of glycol- protein which are used for human health. Aloine A, and Aloine B, are principles of the ayurvedic medicine.

Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis) is a popular medicinal plant. It belongs to liliaceae family. It is a perennial plant, growing to the height of 0.5m – 0.8m. Its leaves are long and thick, juicy with a wheel like phylotaxy. The two sides of the leaves have thorny structure with a thorny tip. The inner substance of the leaves is jelly like, with bad odour and bitter in taste. The length of the leaves ranges from 25-30 cm, while the breadth ranges from 3-5 cm.

Kasani- 'sugar ka ped'

Over the past 18 months, authorities have sold 20,000 Kasni herb plants that traditional medicine experts say are effective in treating kidney , liver diseases and high blood sugar

Forest officer Madan Singh Bisht discovered the herb in the state’s Dehradun district around two years ago. He says he knew about its medicinal properties and wanted to pass on the benefits to the people.
Bisht says the benefits of Kasni build up on chewing the leaves when the juice mixes with the saliva.

Kasni, with the scientific name Cichorium intybus and English name- endive / chicory, is found in nature in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
But the plant is reportedly on the verge of extinction because of weeds and excessive use of pesticides.
The medicinal properties of Kasni are well-known in ayurveda and one of the varieties is used in preparing the liver-care Liv 52 tablets by Himalaya Herbals.

According to Ayurveda it is kapha and pitta suppressant. It is relaxant and induces sleep. It acts as pain reliever and anti inflammatory agent. It works as appetizer, liver stimulant and increases digestive powers. It acts as blood purifier and provides strength to heart. It is a diuretic. Its roots reduce menstrual disturbances. It has good effect in lowering down the burning sensations in the body. It also helps in lowering the blood pressure. It decreases the raised body temperature in fevers.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) improves sexual function and satisfaction in women

According to results of a double blind, randomized, placebo-controlled pilot trial.

Data from 50 women indicated that eight weeks of supplementation with the Ayurvedic herb at a daily dose of 600 was associated with significant improvements in sexual interest, arousal, lubrication and in achieving orgasm, compared to placebo. Ashwagandha supplementation caused a marked reduction in sexually related distress in women during the study, wrote the researchers in the journal - BioMed Research International

Ashwagandha has been gaining traction in the mainstream US market with consumers embracing its wide-ranging body of health benefits, which include supporting stress, cognitive function, sleep, metabolic wellness, adrenal function, sports performance, and more.

Ashwagandha has a history of use in ayurvedic medicine that dates back as much as 4,000 years.Ashwagandha root has traditionally recommended for use as an enhancer of sexual function in both men and women. While there are other published studies demonstrating the effectiveness of ashwagandha in improving sexual function in men, this is the first study using a standardized, branded ashwagandha extract and demonstrating significant positive effects on sexual function in women.

From the scientific literature, we know that the Ashwagandha root is a calming agent, and promotes balance in the body to increase or decrease key hormone levels to bring them to appropriate levels. These effects are perhaps responsible for the significant effects we see in this study. Female sexual dysfunction and satisfaction is a complex phenomenon with both psychological and physiological dimensions. standardized ashwagandha extract is one of the very few ingredients shown to be clinically effective for this application. Supplementation was also associated with significantly greater improvements in FSFI score for “arousal”, “lubrication”, “orgasm”, and “satisfaction”, said the researchers. The explanation for why [ashwagandha root extract] treatment was useful in reducing [female sexual dysfunction] may lie in two pathways: (1) ashwagandha’s role in reducing stress, which in turn is associated with [female sexual dysfunction], and (2) ashwagandha’s role in increasing Testosterone which is a factor in androgen deficiency syndrome which is associated with [female sexual dysfunction].

Ayurveda globally relevant due to its holistic approach: PM Modi

"Today, Ayurveda is globally relevant because of its holistic and comprehensive approach to health.

The ayurvedic 'Dincharya' (daily routine) helps to bring about peace and harmony in one's life. Ayurvedic daily routines are meant to enhance the health of a human being, both mental and physical," Modi said at the ongoing Global Ayurveda Festival here.

He said non-communicable as well as lifestyle diseases like hypertension, diabetes, and cancers had become the greatest health challenges to the world community.

Modi said the escalating cost of treatment and side effects of allopathic medicines had prompted medical experts to think of widening their horizons to traditional systems of medicine.

He said India has had a long tradition of saints and hermits who evolved the indigenous systems of health care like Ayurveda, Yoga and siddha.

However, Modi said, the real potential of ayurveda remained untapped due to inadequate scientific scrutiny and concerns regarding standards and quality.
If this problem is resolved, India could be a leader in making affordable, holistic healthcare available to the world, the prime minister said.

An effective remedy for treating urinary tract infections — Banyan tree bark

In Ayurveda, the bark of the Banyan tree is used for treating female genital tract infections caused by sexually transmitted diseases,’ says Dr H S Palep, Visiting Scientist at Haffkine’s Institute for Training, Research & Testing, Mumbai and Chairman, Dr.Palep’s Medical Research Foundation and also a practicing gynecologist trained in Ayurveda.

The bark of the tree can actually be effective in treating urinary tract infections like trichomonias, vaginitis and also pelvic inflammatory infections. Trichomonias is a common sexually transmitted infection and causes symptoms like vaginal itching, pain during intercourse and urination and abdominal pain. ‘Banyan tree bark is administered to patients in the form of capsules or even loose extracts. Other than this, bark decoctions can also be used as a vaginal douche, but that isn’t as effective as taking it in the capsule form,’ says Dr Palep.

In fact, a form of Ayurvedic treatment known as Panchavakal, uses barks of five trees from the Ficus family including fig tree, peepal, albizia lebbeck, plaksha and banyan tree for treating these disorders. Other than that, it is also used for healing wounds in the form of an ointment. Panchavalkal is also used for treating a wide range of skin disorders and other ailments.

An egg a day may keep diabetes away

The study, published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that men who ate approximately four eggs per week had a 37 percent lower risk of Type-2 diabetes than men who only ate one egg a week.

Researchers at the University of Eastern Finland assessed dietary habits of 2,332 men aged between 42 and 60 years during a follow-up of 19 years, 432 men were diagnosed with Type-2 diabetes.

The study found that egg consumption was associated with a lower risk of Type-2 diabetes as well as with lower blood glucose levels.Consumption of more than four eggs did not bring any significant additional benefits.

In addition to cholesterol, eggs contain many beneficial nutrients that can have an effect on, for example, glucose metabolism and low-grade inflammation, and thus lower the risk of Type-2 diabetes.

What are the precautions you should take to keep yourself away from Diabetes?
Ayurveda has provided right answer to this.

Unable to understand why the baby is crying? This app can help you

An app that can differentiate between a variety of crying sounds made by babies has been developed by Taiwanese researchers.

The Infant Cries Translator was developed at the National Taiwan University Hospital Yunlin and can differentiate between four separate crying sounds by recording the sounds of babies and comparing them against a vast database.

Over a two year period researchers collected around 200,000 crying sounds from approximately 100 new-born babies, and uploaded them to an online database. Analysis of the frequency of individual screams among these helped researchers, led by Chang Chuan-yu and Dr Chen Si-da, distinguish subtle differences in acoustics.

The resulting app shows analysis of a baby's cries on the user's phone within 15 seconds. Researchers say the app has an accuracy of 92 percent for infants under two weeks old, helping inform parents when their child is hungry, sleepy, in pain, or has a wet diaper. The analysis becomes less accurate the older the baby is.[msn-news]

Government hospitals in UP introduce music therapy

Two government hospitals in Lucknow have introduced music therapy to cure patients suffering from mental and lifestyle disorders. The doctors in these hospitals have introduced classical music for specific disorders, including depression, dementia and other related problems.

According to Dr Ashutosh Dubey of Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, a number of patients have started responding favourably to the therapy.
“A patient , Aarav Kumar, from Barabanki district was suffering from moderate depression and instead of prescribing medicine, we asked him to listen to a particular ‘raga’ in classical music. Two weeks later, he admitted he was feeling better and said he did not require any medication,” the doctor said.
Another patient, Mr Suhail Khan, in the same hospital, was suffering from severe depression and could not even recall his own name and address. Along with basic medicines, the patient was asked to listen to classical music and he also showed a marked improvement on his next visit. “In my own cabin, I make sure that the ‘Gayatri Mantra’ is played continuously because patients are required to wait for their turn. Majority of them say that they feel better sitting in the cabin,” Dr Dubey said.

Explaining the phenomenon, Dr Devashish Shukl, a senior consultant at the RML hospital said that the vibrations that emanate from music activate the glands and improve the blood circulation in the body, which soothes the nerves and bring a sense of relief to the patients.

The civil hospital also has found a positive impact of music, both vocal and instrumental, on patients.
“Some patients feel better listening to film songs on their radio and we allow them to play music with earphones so that others are not disturbed.
Doctors in Lucknow, in consultation with senior faculty members of the Bhatkhande Music College, have shortlisted the ragas that help in curing people.
For instance, Raag Darbari and Raag Sarang are beneficial in treating cardiac patients. Sitar recital also helps in improving the cardiac functioning. Insomnia can be cured to an extent by listening to Raag Bhairavi and Raag Sohni . Flute recital is also known to lull one to sleep. Raag Khamaj helps in relieving a patient from acidity, especially if one listen to this while eating.

Turmeric with Omega-3 Prevents Onset of Diabetes

An Indian origin scientist from the University of Newcastle’s Nutraceuticals Research Group has found that curcumin in turmeric in combinatin with Omega-3 can delay type-2 diabetes and even prevent it effectively, if taken regularly.

Professor Manohar Garg says the cause of the type 2 diabetes is due to systemic inflammation that affects secretion fuction of pancreas glands and Turmeric can act on it effectively.

Curcumin, present in Turmeric, which is part of the ginger family, has several healing properties and is a key component in ancient Hindu Ayurvedic treatment for many ailments including diabetes combinations. It is used in traditional medicine to heal bruises, sprains, wounds and inflammation.
Since the modern food habits have dropped down the in-take of Turmeric in Indian traditional food items, “it parallels with a significant rise in type 2 diabetes cases. In fact the disease is now an epidemic in India and may soon be the number one health burden,” said Garg.

Diabetes is taking the status of a potential epidemic in India with more than 62 million diabetic individuals currently diagnosed with the disease. In 2000, India with 31.7 million diabetics topped the world with the highest number of people with diabetes mellitus followed by China (20.8 million) with the United States (17.7 million) in second and third place respectively.
According to WHO, the prevalence of diabetes is predicted to double globally with a maximum increase in India. It is predicted that by 2030 diabetes mellitus may afflict up to 79.4 million individuals in India.

Becoming Ayurvedic practitioner in the US

Ayurveda is a holistic approach to personal wellbeing and medical healing which has its foundations in India, but has pervaded to other parts of the world over time, including the United States. Alternative medicine has gained popularity among the population over the last few years, perhaps owing to the negative effects of manufactured therapies, and the fact that natural remedies are less intrusive and have fewer side effects than their counterparts.

The following is the most basic information for those interested in setting up a career in any field of Ayurveda:

Education – a degree is not required in the United States in order to practice Ayurveda. However, medical practitioners looking to add alternative medicine to their skill set must first pursue the required education. Degree programs are available in India, right up to Doctorate levels. In US however, you can get approved professional courses lasting a few months for each level.

Main practice areas – Ayurveda is concerned with the application of holistic treatments and specialized alternative medical/health plans to treat patients with various ailments

Licensing – the practice itself requires no licensing as yet, but any medical professional must be appropriately vetted and licensed in their chosen field

Certification– Full-fledged degree programs are currently only available in India, and these may take five years to complete, even more, depending on the specifics of the course. Medical practitioners in other fields in the US can complete NAMA-approved educational programs, which include short-term, seminar/workshop-style courses, distance learning programs and 500-hour programs. On successful completion, the practitioner will be duly certified.

The US has no instituted standards on Ayurvedic practice, since it is fairly new to the market. You can easily add Ayurveda to your existing repertoire of medical expertise, which is the most common way practitioners in the US are using to venture into the field.

For Reviving Ayurveda

Ayurveda is gradually reviving again and getting popular since it has negligible side effect and is totally natural treatment. But the biggest hurdle in this process of rejuvenation of Ayurveda is getting the right herb at the right time as due to the shrinking of the forest and climate change there is a constant threat of the herbs gradually getting extinct. To overcome such hindrances some 55 traditional Ayurveda practitioners of remote Kanchanchanpur subdivision in north Tripura have come together under the banner of Vaidyaraj Herbal Growers Society (VHGS) and set up 10 herbal gardens at various places.

Marma chikitsa can cure lifestyle ailments

Marma chikitsa is based on the healing-touch ayurvedic science concept, which is mainly dependent on 107 sensitive points in the human body for curing various ailments. It was practised by Indian sages in the ancient times even before yoga and other forms of healing practices appeared globally.
Marma chikitsa is quite effective in curing modern day lifestyle generated ailments. Renowned Marma chikitsa expert Dr Sunil Joshi stated this while addressing mediapersons at Haridwar.

Dr Joshi said the Marma art of treatment is based on 107 sensitive points in our body. All these points are connected with the brain and are pressed lightly or hardly to stimulate senses. Besides curing various ailments, this therapy is quite effective in preventive aspects too, making a person live a healthy life and strengthening his immune system.

Advanced courses in Marma chikitsa are conducted by International Academy of Ayurveda (www.ayurved-int.com)

Practise ayurveda and keep calm

A healthy mind and body is possible through ayurvedic practices like 'panchakarma' and "pancha jnyanendriya", said N V Krishnamurthy, director, Abhigna International Academy of Ayurveda and Yoga, at Mysuru.

He was addressing paramedical students at a seminar on "Management of Dementia - Challenges to Patient's Caregivers", organized by Sarada Vilas College of Pharmacy. "Pancha jnyanendriya carries message to the brain. If sense and motor organs are healthy, then many problems can be avoided. We need to support ayurveda just like we did with yoga

Today we see a Nobel Prize awarded for work in traditional Chinese medicine. This raises the question why AYURVEDA is not afforded the same consideration, not only worldwide but also in India?

Ayurveda is as profound and sophisticated as traditional Chinese medicine and shares a great deal with it, particularly relative to the role of prana (chi in the Chinese system), with both viewing the human being as an intricate system of energy patterns, much like modern physics and its view of the universe. Both recommend herbs as their main healing modality, including special tonic and rejuvenative agents to improve longevity, immunity and higher awareness. Both are based upon ancient medical texts and have in depth methods of diagnosis and treatment. The two are regarded as the oldest and most extensive natural healing traditions in the world.

Yet while the communist government of China supported the traditional medicine of the country as the medicine of the people, the government of India did not so favour ayurveda, until the current Modi administration, and instead emphasised modern medicine to the point where ayurveda was marginalised.

Meanwhile many Indians have taken up the study of modern medicine and immigrant Indians now represent a significant percentage of doctors in the US and UK. Yet while Chinese doctors usually support traditional Chinese medicine, few Indian medical doctors have seriously taken up the cause of ayurveda.

Yet ayurveda has spread in spite of all this, with ayurvedic books, programmes and treatment centres available in most countries of the world today. This has happened mainly because ayurveda has been promoted by independent groups - particularly those working in yoga, ayurveda and meditation fields, who have introduced ayurveda globally as a transformative and futuristic system of mind-body medicine.

Yoga and ayurveda

Yoga in India is closely related to other traditional disciplines, particularly ayurveda. When yoga texts speak of health, they employ the ayurvedic terminology of doshas (biological humours), agni (digestive fire), the five pranas or types of vital energy, and related factors. Yoga by itself is not a medical system but a spiritual practice, such as is explained in the Yoga Sutras. Yoga has no disease theory or system of diagnosis of its own. For this it has relied upon ayurveda.

Ayurveda takes the yogic view of consciousness and applies it for healing purposes. It teaches a yogic way of life as an ideal means of both health and happiness. Ayurveda recommends the daily practice of yoga, not just asana but also pranayama and meditation, for harmony of body and mind. If we are looking for a yogic system of medicine in terms of both diagnosis and treatment, we find that already beautifully structured in traditional ayurveda.

The complication is that because of the suppression of ayurveda during the colonial era, when yoga spread worldwide during the 20th century, ayurveda was not usually part of it. And while India at Independence brought ayurveda back to some degree, it removed most of its connections to yoga in an effort to make it more acceptable to modern medicine.

The yoga and ayurveda connection only became popular during the last few decades when various spiritual groups, starting with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, began to emphasise it. Swami Ramdev has recently revived yoga and ayurveda in a major way in India, making the connection widely known.

As someone who has worked in the field of yoga and ayurveda for over 30 years, I am happy to see this extraordinary progress of ayurveda, but it still has far to go to realise its full potential. Greater support is essential for ayurveda to gain the recognition it deserves, and to encourage more people to follow and benefit from its life-changing practices.

Health care is the fastest rising cost in the world today. Drug-based medicine is unaffordable for poorer countries like India and problematical in the West, with numerous damaging side effects. Drugs should be the last rather than the first means of treatment, beginning with natural healing methods like yoga and ayurveda instead. Special ayurvedic methods of oil massage and Pancha Karma, such as are popular in Kerala, can remove disease-causing factors before the disease even manifests.

India should not over emphasise drug-based medicine and be forced to return to ayurveda later. The country should honor its own great tradition of natural healing through ayurveda, which is helpful to everyone, just as it is embracing yoga.

The writer,DR DAVID FRAWLEY, is the director of the American Institute of Vedic Studies and the author of more than 30 books on yoga and vedic traditions.

Ditch the Flu Shot and Do This Instead

Every year we get bombarded with posters and slogans to get flue vaccines. We are witnessing a powerful psychological attack under the title “the Vaccine is the best protection against the flu!”. You can’t help but come to a conclusion that a common flue is the most dangerous thing in the world and thus, there is nothing else left for you to do except to get this shot. But wait! You have to know that flu vaccines have been proved to be not only ineffective but also toxic for humans and animals.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “The following substances are found in flu vaccines: aluminum, antibiotics, egg protein, formaldehyde, human aborted fetal apparatus (dead human tissue), monosodium glutamate (MSG), and thimerosol (mercury).” Flu vaccines are directly linked to long-term health consequences.

Truth is that only people with weakened immune systems get affected with Flu.

Here are a few things you can take to strengthen your immune system naturally.

Cod liver oil.
It’s incredibly full of fat-soluble vitamins that support the immune system and fatty acids like EPA and DHA that reduce inflammation. EPA is the precursor of important prostaglandins (localized tissue hormones that help the body deal with inflammation). Cod liver oil has more vitamin A and more vitamin D per unit weight than any other food. A single teaspoon of high-vitamin oil contains nearly 2000 IU. There are virtually no infectious diseases that do not respond well to treatment which consists of cod liver oil.

Thyme
has amazing antiviral, bactericidal, fungicidal, antibiotic, and antiseptic properties which makes it a great natural additive during cold and flu season. Not only is thyme is known for killing microbes, but it also helps the body to eliminate toxins. In addition, it benefits the immune system by encouraging the formation of white blood cells, increasing immune response to invading organisms.

Tumeric
Add turmeric to your meals or to ginger tea. Turmeric’s anti-bacterial agents may help our body fight against colds, cough and flu.  Turmeric’s key ingredient Curcumin is known for its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties which can help in healing cuts and wounds.
