Ayurvedic Treatment of Fibromyalgia

The aggravation of Vata Dosha or accumulation of Ama (toxins) are the primary causes . There is associated weak digestion, constipation, and effects of chronic stress also and that should also be tackled.

The treatment of fibromyalgia, which is primarily a Vātavyadhi disease, focuses on both Vāta Shamana (re-balance) and Samshodhana (purification) along with management of Ama.

Panchakarma therapy: This is the main line of treatment in this disorder and ideally is the initial intervention in fibromyalgia if the patient has no contraindications. Purification measures namely 'Snehan' and 'Swedan' are very effective to balance 'Vata' and helps to dissolve toxins. Medicated oil is applied to the entire body followed by fomentation therapy with herbal decoction. This Snehana and Swedana therapy provides a deeply soothing and balancing effect to Vata. The friction and movements massage creates heat which enhances circulation and helps cleanse the Ama or other impurities that could be aggravating and hypersensitizing nerve tissues. For these purpose –Bala Taila / Ksheerbala Taila / Mahanarayana Taila / Kottamchukadi Taila / Dhanvantara Taila etc can be used. Patients with predominance of Kapha can undergo Vamana by using Madanphala Yoga. Similarly with Pitta aggravation, Virechana can be planned with Trivritta Avaleha, Avipattikara Churna, Eranda oil or Triphala Churna depending on Koshtha. In stress prone individuals who have sleep and mood disturbances, Sirovirechana or Nasya can be planned.
Patients with constipation, debility and other Vata predominant features may undergo Matra Basti or a schedule of Kala or Yoga Basti.

Ayurvedic palliative medicines: If there is pain or stiffness or tenderness-Dashamula Kwath / Dashamularishtam, Rasnadi Guggulu, Yograj Guggulu, Simhanad Guggulu can be prescribed. If pain is associated with fatigue – Rasayana Churna, Chayvanaprasha, Bala Churna, Ashvagandha Churna or Gokshura Churna can be given with milk or water twice or thrice daily. If there is mood swing / sleep disturbances then Mansyadi Kwath with Brahmi Churna + Sankhapusphi Churna + Jatamansi Churna can be prescribed along with other medicines as per requirement.

Yoga Practice:  It is documented that fibromyalgia is often worsened by excessive stress, anxiety and mental fatigue. There are hormonal changes and other biochemical responses to stress that can aggravate the nervous system, and the immune response and affects quality of sleep pattern which in turn aggravates the fibromyalgia syndrome. Various stretching exercises are known to have a positive effect on fibromyalgia. Regular practicing of different yogic postures are helpful. Shavasana (Corpse posture) brings about a relaxed state of mind, Pranayama (Yogic breathing practices) create a state of restful alertness in mind and body.

Diet and nutrition: The diet normally advised for patients of fibromyalgia is a modified Vata-pacifying diet (Pathyam). It should include:
• Vegetable juices and soups prepared  from Guard, bottle guard, carrot, tomato, pumpkin, spinach, beet root.
• Coconut water.
• Kichadi (recipe made by cooking red/bran rice and mung dal.)
• Warm milk with spices like cinnamon, cardamom, ginger and clove
Fibromyalgia patients should avoid the following food articles (Apathyam) and behaviors:
• Hot (spicy) and fried foods; processed, excessive salt or sugar; very bitter and astringent foods, cauliflower, brinjal, potatoes.
• Excessive tea, coffee, alcohol, curd, chocolate, cocoa, milk.
• Sleeping during the day and staying up late at night.
• Mental tensions like worry, anxiety, fear, stress and grief.

Asthma: Effective Home Remedies

According to ‘The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies’ by Dr. Vasant Lad, “The underlying cause of all asthmatic conditions is increased Kapha dosha in stomach. From there it moves into the lungs , trachea and bronchi. The increased kapha blocks the natural flow of air, creating spasm in the bronchial tree and resulting in asthma and wheezing.” Kapha is one of the three energies or doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) responsible for maintaining balance of overall health. Ayurvedic treatments for asthma focus on wiping out the Kapha lodged in the lungs .

Herbal remedies taken on a regular basis  in the long run. Herbs like vasa, pushkarmula and yastimadhu have been known to control the symptoms of asthma. Here are some Ayurvedic home remedies that could help in reducing the symptoms of asthma and controlling the frequency of asthma attacks.

1.Half cup of ginger tea mixed with 2-3 crushed garlic cloves could prove to be an effective remedy to release the kapha accumulation in the airways, thereby preventing asthmatic attacks.

2.Boil a teaspoon of freshly grated ginger in a glass of milk and add 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder to it. If taken twice a day, this Ayurvedic remedy could reduce the frequency of asthma attacks.

3.Mix one teaspoon of cinnamon and 1/4th teaspoon trikatu into a cup of boiling water. Let it steep for 10 minutes and add 1 teaspoon of honey before drinking.Take this twice a day for maximum benefits.

4. Drink a tea made with half teaspoon licorice and half teaspoon of ginger for asthma prevention.ginger teaGinger tea normalizes airways to enable proper breathing.

5.Half teaspoon of bay leaf and 1/4th teaspoon of pippali mixed with 1 teaspoon of honey taken two to three times a day may also help prevent chronic symptoms of asthma.

Where science stands on - Cinnamon

Diabetes and cholesterol

Biochemist Amy Stockert, who studies cinnamon at Raabe College of Pharmacy at Ohio Northern University co-authored a small study of 18 people with type 2 diabetes that showed the cassia species of cinnamon was more effective than diet alone in lowering blood glucose levels. In fact, her study found that it was comparable to oral diabetes medications.

Another study of 60 people with type 2 diabetes found that small doses of cinnamon reduced blood sugar levels and improved LDL, or "bad" cholesterol, triglycerides and total cholesterol.

Still, if you want to see whether cinnamon works for you, people with type 2 diabetes are advised to do a self-test.

Do some paired blood glucose testing. Use a half a teaspoon in the morning, on fruit or oatmeal or in coffee, and see what happens to your blood sugar levels before and after you eat. Check again two to three hours later and see if there's a difference.

Dementia, HIV, cancer and more

The antioxidant properties of cinnamon are also being studied for their impact on the formation of the plaques and tangles of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. Cinnamaldehyde, a compound responsible for the spice's sweet smell, and epicatechin, a powerful antioxidant that's also in blueberries, red wine and chocolate, seem to offer some protection against the oxidative stress that damages tau, a key player in the development of dementia.

Another study found a component of Ceylon cinnamon to have the same effect. However, research has occurred only in mice, rats and laboratory Petri dishes.

"It appears to work as an anti-inflammatory or antioxidant, protecting the body on a cellular level from bad things that happen," Wright said, "by getting rid of waste products and keeping the cells healthy."

Cinnamon and other traditional Indian medicinal plants are also being tested in the fight against HIV. One study found that green tea, elderberry and some extracts of cinnamon rich in flavonoids blocked the virus from entering and infecting certain cells.

The research on cinnamon doesn't stop there. Ceylon cinnamon has also been associated with cancer-fighting properties in rodents, anti-parasitic effects, improved diabetic neuropathy, lower blood pressure and wound healing, including liver damage. Studies have shown that solutions of cinnamon oil can kill a number of common bacteria, such as streptococcus and E. coli. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health is investigating cinnamon's impact on multiple sclerosis.

Using a computer model, biochemist Stockert found that cinnamon was as effective as resveratrol, an antioxidant in red wine known for anti-aging and disease-fighting properties, in activating SIRT-1 -- also known as the longevity gene because of its role in repairing DNA.

Today the holistic system of Ayurveda has become popular worldwide. Herbal and natural extracts have been formulated into different products for skin, hair and body care, using the latest scientific techniques.

An important advantage is the lack of harmful side-effects. Synthetic preparations and chemical ingredients, on the other hand, can cause allergic and irritation. They can also cause a build-up of toxins in the system, over a period of time.

Herbs have been used in Ayurvedic treatments to cleanse the skin of toxins and wastes. The safety factor makes herbs ideal for cosmetic care. Herbs have powerful healing properties and many benefits for skin and hair care. They have definite protective, preventive and corrective actions.  Herbs help improve the normal functions of the skin and scalp, including that of cell renewal. Thus, they have the power to revitalize and rejuvenate.

Another important benefit of using herbs is that they help to restore the normal balance- that has been disturbed due to air pollutants, chlorinated water, alkaline soaps, and make-up. Synthetic and chemical ingredients in cosmetic preparations disrupt the normal balance. When the normal pH balance is disturbed, it results in skin and hair problems. So, our regular skin and hair care routine should be such that helps to restore the acid-alkaline balance.
Most natural ingredients have properties that help in beauty care, while some are powerful cleansers, others are excellent moisturisers. Some improve blood circulation, and others tighten the skin. By and large, organic ingredients have preserving, preventive and rejuvenating powers and are readily accepted and assimilated by the body.

For example, ingredients like sandalwood, basil (tulsi), mint (pudina), neem (margosa) can be used to treat eruptive conditions of the skin, like acne.

After India’s Patent Win, US Pharmaceuticals Suddenly Claim that Turmeric has no Medicinal Properties

In 1997 the Indian Government won a major victory to prevent US firms from patenting Turmeric’s medicinal properties.. and now suddenly a “new study” finds that turmeric is not useful for making medicines. This clearly shows that the pharmaceutical industry is out to make money .. not cures.
In 1995 , two American researchers of the University of Mississippi Medical Center, put a claim to the US Patent and Trademark Office, maintaining that they had discovered haldi‘s healing properties. And, surprise, they were granted a patent in March 1995 for something you had known for years and our ayurveda for centuries.

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research applied to the US Patent Office for a reexamination. This was after Indian scientists shouted from rooftops about how we are losing our traditional knowledge to marauding foreign companies who have started poaching on our ancient healing techniques. The US Patent Office in 1997 acknowledged it had made a mistake and cancelled the patent on turmeric. This is a major victory because seldom does it fully revoke a patent it has granted.

But now a new study says “In a new review of chemical evidence, scientists write that curcumin is an “unstable, reactive, non-bioavailable compound and, therefore, a highly improbable lead [for drug development].”   The article concludes that “The resources being wasted on difficult curcumin research could instead be spent on thousands of other chemicals lying on shelves waiting to be tested”   (Meaning you could research stuff  off which we can make more money!)

Ayurvedic anticancer drug showing promise in trials

Research on the effect of an ayurvedic drug on cancer has shown promising results in tests on mice, said pathologist Dr Vinod Shidham, who is currently working in the USA.
Currently, Dr Shidham is part of a unique research for cancer treatment using an ayurvedic medicine called 'Rohitak'. He said, "The medicine has been tested on mice for treating prostate cancer with good results; we plan to perform similar method for pancreatic cancer treatment."
He said, "Any tumour cell requires blood supply, without which it will die. Initially, we took out malignant tissue and allowed the tumour to grow. Then, using an ayurvedic medicine named 'Rohitak' on a tissue, we observed that the medicine does not kill the tumour but it is shrinking the blood vessels that pass through it. With no blood supply, the tumour dies."
Dr Shidham said, "Once we are able to get successful results on pancreatic cancer, we will be looking forward to perform clinical trials to get the treatment into mainstream." He added, "If India starts to perform such clinical trials, the cancer scenario will improve."

Turmeric-laced ‘Golden milk’ - the newest health drink

A detoxifying drink used in traditional Indian medicine, golden milk owes its name to the bright yellow color of turmeric. Mixed with warming spices like cinnamon, pepper and ginger, this sugar-free and antioxidant drink is a pleasant alternative to coffee, or Christmas season staples mulled wine and hot chocolate.

Known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties, turmeric activates the happiness hormone, serotonin. The ochre-coloured root is also a standard ingredient in Indian cuisines.

In combination with pepper and ginger, turmeric is the key ingredient in golden milk, an Ayurvedic-inspired medicinal drink that promotes good digestion and detoxifies the body. It is made by forming a paste of water, turmeric and pepper, which is then combined with coconut, soy or almond milk, along with a dash of coconut oil or cold-pressed extra-virgin olive oil. Honey or cinnamon are added for extra flavor and sweetness.

Easy to prepare, this hot, sweet, milky drink is not only tasty, but also healthy, especially in the winter months when its warming spices give it a Christmassy flavor.

The latest health food trend, the drink is all the rage on Instagram. It has also been hailed as an elixir by “clean eating” celebrities and health bloggers.

A gramme of turmeric every morning could improve the memories of people at risk of cognitive impairment, according to researchers at the Monash Asia Institute in Melbourne, Australia. At the same time, an American study has found that a combination of turmeric and silymarin (milk thistle extract), a traditional remedy for liver complaints, could help prevent colon cancer.

Now, ayurveda treatment gets insurance cover

In a major push to the Indian traditional systems of treatment, the Central government has agreed to extend insurance coverage to ayurvedic therapy as well.
The ayush ministry has also issued guidelines for claiming insurance for the ayurvedic therapies.
According to the ministry, the guidelines have been framed after consulting the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) as well as 23 insurance companies and ayurveda experts and industry representatives.
Only a few government companies were providing insurance coverage for select ayurvedic treatments,
It was for the first time that so many private insurance companies have come forward to provide insurance coverage to about 20 ayurvedic treatment procedures.
In the ministry's guidelines, the standard costs that can be claimed for various therapeutic procedures and the duration of treatments have been broadly listed.

Mobile App to help diabetic patients with ayurvedic medicines

Soon, people with diabetes will be able to find out what ayurvedic medicines to take to check their rising blood glucose levels. As part of its 'Mission Madhumeha' launched last month, the government is set to launch a mobile app which will suggest ayurvedic medicines for diabetic patients.

The app will be meant for use by both practitioners of ayurveda as well patients. It will help in identifying the type of diabetes a patient is suffering from as well as recommend which ayurvedic medicines can be administered to a patient, says Manoj Nesari, Adviser to AYUSH Ministry. The app is based on a set of guidelines issued by AYUSH ministry last month called "Protocol for Prevention and Control of Diabetes through Ayurveda".The protocol also includes a list of fruits and vegetables a diabetic patient should or should not eat. It also recommends an active lifestyle, physical exercise, yoga in order to avoid falling prey to diabetes.

Ashtavarga herbs in Chyavanprash

Pharmaceutical industry analysts have estimated that about 15,500 tonnes of Chyavanprash was sold across the country last year. Children and adults consume the product which is promoted as a remedy against cold, cough and respiratory infections among other health disorders.

The primary ingredient of Chyavanprash is amla, or gooseberry. The original texts of Ayurveda list thirty-eight herbs as ingredients of Chyavanprash, but most commercial formulations now use substitute herbs, including extracts of the eight plants named in traditional medicine as kakoli, kshirkakoli, jeevak, rishbhak, meda, mahameda, riddhi and vriddhi. These are collectively called ashtavarga and are believed to increase the anti-oxidant activity of amla.

"A 10th century commentary on the ayurveda text Charak Samhita specifically mentions alternatives if the ashtavarga are not available," said J.L.N. Sastry, head of ayurveda research at Dabur India, a company that manufactures traditional remedies, including Chyavanprash.

Scientists at the IIIM have already acquired three of the eight plants - jeevak, mahameda and rishbhak - and are trying to use plant tissue culture technology to grow them in the laboratory's greenhouse. Plant biologists from the IIIM are also collaborating with scientists in other academic institutions and local communities in the Himalayan region, and in parts of northern and northeastern India to look for the other five species.

Though Chyavanprash has been used for centuries, some scientists say that its therapeutic benefits still need to be rigorously assessed. A review of clinical studies involving Chyavanprash published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology in August this year had found that while several studies have shown improvements in health status and immunity, most such studies have involved small samples of patients and short periods of observations.

ANTI-DIABETIC AYURVEDIC DRUG: BGR-34

“The traditional knowledge from ayurveda is certainly valuable for discovering new drugs for diabetes,” Bhushan Patwardhan, professor of health sciences at Pune University said, adding: “But it should be based on scientific evidence for safety, quality and efficacy”, which is absent in the case of BGR-34.
In contrast, he said, discovery of artemisinin from traditional Chinese medicine — which has become a drug of choice for treatment of malaria and got its inventor a Nobel Prize — required over three decades of rigorous scientific work.
“India needs to follow the robust path of discoveries like reserpine (derived from the sarpagandha Indian snakeroot), used to treat high blood pressure and not succumb to cheap publicity or short-term economic gains that will eventually erode the credibility of India’s traditional knowledge heritage,” Patwardhan said.
“At the same time, government regulations, oversight and surveillance is required to ensure that gullible patients are not exploited by misleading commercial advertisements promoting various products by making unrealistic claims,” he added.
According to Patwardhan, BGR-34 is not the first ayurvedic diabetic drug to be commercialised without scientific validation. He says no published scientific papers are available regarding Ayush-82 — another anti-diabetic drug — developed by the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences under the Ayush Ministry and commercialised recently. 'Papaya extract tablet boosts immunity, can't cure dengue'

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation on Thursday said that it will distribute pills made of papaya extract near public gardens and various urban and public health centres. The civic body will distribute the pills made of herbal concoction for free.

However, Ayurvedic doctors claim that these pills only help boost immunity and are not a sure shot cure for dengue. While the tablets are available over the counter, they are very expensive.

There are a number of cures for fever in ayurveda. "Consumption of bitter substances such as the extract of giloy or tinospora cordifoila, generally help cure fever. Giloy is useful in strengthening the immune system and builds up the body's defense against infections.

Ayurveda to undergo clinical trials before hitting market

Ayurvedic and other alternative medicines openly sold without any regulations in India would soon need to undergo a strict procedure of research and clinical trials before hitting the market.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), under its Draft National Ethical Guidelines for Biomedical and Health Research involving Human Participants, 2016, has proposed that in a bid to ensure patient safety and efficacy, there should be proper research and clinical trials on these drugs.

“Though Traditional Systems of medicine (termed Complementary and Alternate Systems in the West) are known for their long history of safe and effective use, validation of safety and efficacy using scientific and evidence-based methodologies is needed for the purpose of universal acceptability, gaining confidence of practitioners and satisfaction of end users in the products,” said Dr Soumya Swaminathan, Director General, ICMR and Secretary, Department of Health Research (DHR), Union Health Ministry.

Ayurvedic Herbal Cure for ADHD

Ayurveda works by using herbs to regulate the energies responsible for the features of our body. We all require healthful quantities of vata for our bodies to operate properly. The Ayurvedic herbs made use of to deal with ADHD are herbs that calm down the vata.

While clinical trials have yet to determine the efficacy of these herbs, they seem to be a promising organic remedy for ADHD.

Brahmi

Researchers mentioned that they improve the psychological functions and finding out ability. Brain scans on humans also revealed that brahmi enhances the results of the neurotransmitters GABA, serotonin, and acetylocholine. This can clarify why brahmi is encouraged to treat depression and nervousness. Brahmi is also utilised as a normal antioxidant to shield brain cells and nutrients from free radical harm. There are No Toxins in ayurvedic drugs, say experts

With the campaign against the ayurvedic drugs gaining strength in the West because of the presence of toxic metals, it is time to scientifically prove before the world that the toxicity of the heavy metals is eliminated in the process of preparing ayurvedic medicines, said the experts.
"Scientific studies and clinical have clearly proved that the toxicity of the heavy metals will not be there once it is processed, and in ayurveda mercury is an ingredient, and not a contaminator," said Dr P M Warrier, chief superintendent, Aryavaidyasala Kottakkal, delivering the keynote address at a workshop on 'Standardization of kashayam' organized by Itoozhi Illam Ayurveda Charitable Trust in association with CARe Keralam, a public limited firm established with the support of AYUSH department of government of India here on Friday.
As per a study conducted by IIT, Kharagpur, the heavy metals in ayurvedic bhasmas are in the form of nano particles and there is no toxicity in it and it gets excreted from the body, he said.

Heavy metals in Ayurvedic herbs and traditional Ayurvedic formulations

The heavy metal contamination of ayurvedic medicines is a much talked - about subject these days. The controversy began with the publication of Saper et al in Journal of American Medical Association Volume 292: pages 2868-2873 in 2004. They collected some herbo-mineral preparations from Boston area and analyzed the heavy metal content.  These products were prepared with inorganic substances like arsenic, mercury etc and therefore, their presence was not at all surprising.  However, Saper et al misconstrued  the data and asserted that all ayurvedic medicines are toxic. This paper was followed by many others reporting that Ayurvedic medicines are loaded with heavy metals. These reports were given global publicity through Western print media, TV channels, radio stations and the internet.
The publicity campaign was so successful that now even Ayurvedic physicians believe that ayurvedic medicines contain heavy metals!

Almost all these studies were based on information obtained from ayurvedic medicines prepared from calcined metals and inorganic substances like mercury, arsenic sulphide, antimony and so on. No information is available on the content of heavy metals in traditional ayurvedic medicines prepared exclusively from herbs. Twelve years have elapsed and not even one CSIR institute or the Bureau of Indian Standards had the thoughtfulness to carry out a dispassionate enquiry into the so-called presence of lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury in traditional ayurvedic formulations prepared exclusively using herbs. A small band of researchers in CARe Keralam Ltd,  an Ayurveda consortium in Chalakudi, Kerala, India has finally published a research paper in Aryavaidyan (Volume 28, No.2, published by Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal) demonstrating that 126 ayurvedic formulations produced by 32 companies and 34 common ayurvedic herbs collected from all geographical regions of India contained these heavy metals in quantities well below the limits set by Government of India.

Interestingly, this pro-Ayurveda study was conducted by these non-Ayurveda persons.

Bottle Gourd for Weight Reduction

This humble vegetable is often ignored and not given its due in our culinary diary. It is also known as calabash or opo squash. It is an amazing vegetable with high water content. It can be taken as a cooked vegetable or as juice.
Popularly known as Lauki in India, it is easily digestible and has amazing medicinal properties too. It cools the body and acts as a hydrating agent. Taken first thing in the morning, a glass of bottle gourd juice aids in weight loss, keeping us satiated, thus reducing hunger pangs. It has high-fibre content and it is this that helps in keeping us full.

It helps in the smooth functioning of the digestive system. This helps in regulating the metabolism of the body. Due to a high rate of metabolism, food gets digested quickly and there is no accumulation of fat in the body. Thus, it aids in weight loss indirectly. Bottle gourd juice should not be filtered, as it will result in the loss of fibre and valuable nutrients. Before extracting the juice, a small piece of the vegetable should be tasted, as some vegetables tend to have a bitter taste. Also, never mix bottle gourd juice with the juice of any other vegetable.

Herbal Medicine to Heal your Thyroid

There are many herbal thyroid boosters that can help regulate the thyroid gland. There are also some herbs that may not directly balance the thyroid but may help alleviate symptoms of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.

The following herbs are regarded as good natural support for the thyroid.

1. Bladderwrack: also known as the seaweed fucus, is a form of kelp that has been used medicinally for centuries. The main use of the herb has been for the stimulation of the thyroid gland as a treatment for obesity and cellulite. The high iodine content of the herb stimulates thyroid function which boosts metabolism.

2. Guggul: This Ayurvedic herb has been studied for decades for its pro-thyroid properties. It enhances enzymatic activity in the thyroid and helps the gland to use iodine. In addition, it helps convert thyroid hormone T4 to its more bio-active partner T3.

3. Ashwagandha: Chronic stress puts strain on the all-important HPA (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal) system, which results in suppressed thyroid function. Ashwagandha takes strain off the pituitary and hypothalamus, thereby stimulating thyroid activity.

MORE THAN HALF ALLOPATHIC DOCS PRESCRIBE AYURVEDIC MEDICINES!

If you are dependent on Ayurvedic medicines prescribed by your allopath, then you better think again before taking your next dose. Your doctor is as ignorant about Ayurvedic medicines as you are.

A study by the pharmacology department of KEM hospital has revealed that most of the allopaths who prefer prescribing Ayurvedic medicines for ailments like liver disorder, arthritis, cough and cold, kidney stones and piles, have very little knowledge about Ayurvedic medicines.

According to the study, 99% of the resident doctors did not even learn the basics of Ayurveda but 67% of them prescribe Ayurvedic medicines to their patients.

The study states that the commonly prescribed proprietary Ayurvedic medicines were Liv 52 (39%), Shatavari (13%), Cystone (12%) and common ailments for which these medicines prescribed were liver disorders (34%), arthritis (18%), cough and cold (13%), kidney stones (11%), and piles (10%).

However, while allopaths prescribe Ayurvedic medicines, they don’t show any inclination towards learning about the medicines. “At least 90% of these doctors basically rely on the reputation and credibility of the manufacturer, instead of knowing the content of the medicines. This is what needs to be changed.

Buttermilk — a Versatile Drink

There’s is a simile about Buttermilk: What Nectar is for the gods , buttermilk is for human beings.

Buttermilk improves digestion, treats digestive disorders and other gastro-intestinal disorders. It treats inflammation, , spleen and liver disorders and is also beneficial in anemia. It can be taken instead of an antacid as it fights acidity in the stomach. It also helps with acid reflex after meals as it cools the stomach and soothes any irritation.

Generally, in the treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, the use of Buttermilk ( takra) is emphasized. The patient has to be kept on the diet of buttermilk, which is the treatment and nutrition in IBS. This Ancient Ayurvedic Plant May Be The World’s Most Important Herb

Sayer Ji from Greenmedinfo explains just why turmeric is so miraculous:

Indeed, turmeric turns the entire drug-based medical model on its head.  Instead of causing far more side effects than therapeutic ones, as is the case for most patented pharmaceutical medications, turmeric possesses hundreds of potential side benefits, having been empirically demonstrated to positively modulate over 160 different physiological pathways in the mammalian body.

While no food or herb is right for everyone, and everything has the potential for unintended, adverse side effects, turmeric is truly unique in its exceptionally high margin of safety vis-à-vis the drugs it has been compared with, e.g. hydrocortisone, ibuprofen, chemotherapy agents. Furthermore, nothing within the modern-day pharmaceutical armamentarium comes even remotely close to turmeric’s 6,000 year track record of safe use in Ayurvedic medicine.

There are over 600 potential health benefits of turmeric, and/or its primary polyphenol known as Curcumin. These can be viewed on a turmeric research  page

Symptoms

About 1 in 5 people infected with Zika virus become ill (i.e., develop Zika).
The most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain, or conjunctivitis (red eyes). Other common symptoms include muscle pain and headache. The incubation period (the time from exposure to symptoms) for Zika virus disease is not known, but is likely to be a few days to a week.
The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting for several days to a week.
People usually don’t get sick enough to go to the hospital, and they very rarely die of Zika.
Zika virus usually remains in the blood of an infected person for about a week but it can be found longer in some people.

Treatment

-- There is no vaccine to prevent or specific medicine to treat Zika infections.

Aloe vera – An agricultural option

Of late, because of skyrocketing prices of allopathic medicines with its known side effects, medicinal plants and ayurvedic medicines are becoming popular.

According to research the world trade on these medicines is worth about $80 million now and this is likely to increase by 35-40 percent within five years. USA dominates the market (65%) while India and China have a share of 10 percent each which could be enhanced by its commercial cultivation. With increasing interest in ‘natural’ products across the world and the resultant upsurge in the demand for medicinal plants, this trade is expected to grow up to $5 trillion by the year 2050.

Aloe Vera is among the few medicinal plants by virtue of their extensive medicinal, nutraceutical and other uses, enjoys a major chunk of the market across the globe. The major markets for Aloe Vera and its extracts are Australia, US and the entire Europe.

Kasani- 'sugar ka ped'

Over the past 18 months, authorities have sold 20,000 Kasni herb plants that traditional medicine experts say are effective in treating kidney , liver diseases and high blood sugar

Forest officer Madan Singh Bisht discovered the herb in the state’s Dehradun district around two years ago. He says he knew about its medicinal properties and wanted to pass on the benefits to the people.
Bisht says the benefits of Kasni build up on chewing the leaves when the juice mixes with the saliva.

Kasni, with the scientific name Cichorium intybus and English name- endive / chicory, is found in nature in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
But the plant is reportedly on the verge of extinction because of weeds and excessive use of pesticides.
The medicinal properties of Kasni are well-known in ayurveda and one of the varieties is used in preparing the liver-care Liv 52 tablets by Himalaya Herbals.

According to Ayurveda it is kapha and pitta suppressant. It is relaxant and induces sleep. It acts as pain reliever and anti inflammatory agent. It works as appetizer, liver stimulant and increases digestive powers. It acts as blood purifier and provides strength to heart. It is a diuretic. Its roots reduce menstrual disturbances. It has good effect in lowering down the burning sensations in the body. It also helps in lowering the blood pressure. It decreases the raised body temperature in fevers.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) improves sexual function and satisfaction in women

According to results of a double blind, randomized, placebo-controlled pilot trial.

Data from 50 women indicated that eight weeks of supplementation with the Ayurvedic herb at a daily dose of 600 was associated with significant improvements in sexual interest, arousal, lubrication and in achieving orgasm, compared to placebo. Ashwagandha supplementation caused a marked reduction in sexually related distress in women during the study, wrote the researchers in the journal - BioMed Research International

Ashwagandha has been gaining traction in the mainstream US market with consumers embracing its wide-ranging body of health benefits, which include supporting stress, cognitive function, sleep, metabolic wellness, adrenal function, sports performance, and more.

Ashwagandha has a history of use in ayurvedic medicine that dates back as much as 4,000 years.Ashwagandha root has traditionally recommended for use as an enhancer of sexual function in both men and women. While there are other published studies demonstrating the effectiveness of ashwagandha in improving sexual function in men, this is the first study using a standardized, branded ashwagandha extract and demonstrating significant positive effects on sexual function in women.

From the scientific literature, we know that the Ashwagandha root is a calming agent, and promotes balance in the body to increase or decrease key hormone levels to bring them to appropriate levels. These effects are perhaps responsible for the significant effects we see in this study. Female sexual dysfunction and satisfaction is a complex phenomenon with both psychological and physiological dimensions. standardized ashwagandha extract is one of the very few ingredients shown to be clinically effective for this application. Supplementation was also associated with significantly greater improvements in FSFI score for “arousal”, “lubrication”, “orgasm”, and “satisfaction”, said the researchers. The explanation for why [ashwagandha root extract] treatment was useful in reducing [female sexual dysfunction] may lie in two pathways: (1) ashwagandha’s role in reducing stress, which in turn is associated with [female sexual dysfunction], and (2) ashwagandha’s role in increasing Testosterone which is a factor in androgen deficiency syndrome which is associated with [female sexual dysfunction].

Ayurveda globally relevant due to its holistic approach: PM Modi

"Today, Ayurveda is globally relevant because of its holistic and comprehensive approach to health.

The ayurvedic 'Dincharya' (daily routine) helps to bring about peace and harmony in one's life. Ayurvedic daily routines are meant to enhance the health of a human being, both mental and physical," Modi said at the ongoing Global Ayurveda Festival here.

He said non-communicable as well as lifestyle diseases like hypertension, diabetes, and cancers had become the greatest health challenges to the world community.

Modi said the escalating cost of treatment and side effects of allopathic medicines had prompted medical experts to think of widening their horizons to traditional systems of medicine.

He said India has had a long tradition of saints and hermits who evolved the indigenous systems of health care like Ayurveda, Yoga and siddha.

However, Modi said, the real potential of ayurveda remained untapped due to inadequate scientific scrutiny and concerns regarding standards and quality.
If this problem is resolved, India could be a leader in making affordable, holistic healthcare available to the world, the prime minister said.

Grass Valley College Is First In US To Offer Doctorate In Ayurvedic Medicine

A California college is now offering doctorate degrees in alternative medicine in a first-of-its-kind program.

California College of Ayurveda President Marc Halpern is a pioneer in alternative medicine, and he’s thrilled that after months of applications, there’s now a major step forward for the profession.

“This is the first time a doctor of ayurvedic program has been offered and one that’s accredited and recognized in the state of California,” he said.

Halpern says ayurvedic medicine is nothing new or new age, and it’s a traditional form of medicine in India where doctors are fully licensed.

“There are ayurvedic hospitals in India, and we’ve been creating the infrastructure for that to happen here,” he said.

Now, their students can soon be doctors of ayurvedic medicine as well with a newly developed state-approved program that’s also been accredited by the National Council of Ayurvedic Education.
