Manage Type- 2 Diabetes with Amla Tea

Amla/ Amalaki (Indian Gooseberry) is bitter in taste. Most celebrated effect of Amla is its anti-diabetic property. Diabetics must include bitter foods in their diet. It helps to prevent a surge in blood sugar levels. Amla is also high in fiber. High fiber foods enable gradual release of sugar in the bloodstream. If the sugar is released at a slow pace, your blood sugar levels tend to stay stable for long. Studies say Amla is an effective remedy to prevent pancreatitis, which may hamper the activity of your insulin-secreting cells. Amla is rich in chromium, a mineral which is helpful in regulating your carbohydrates metabolism and make the body more responsive to insulin.
Being a rich source of vitamin C also makes it an ideal diabetic-friendly fruit. A study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, suggested that there is a significant link between vitamin C levels and diabetes. You can eat amla raw and fresh with a sprinkle of rock salt, or you can use it to brew a diabetic-friendly tea.

How To Make Amla Tea For Diabetes:

1. In a steel container, take one and a half cups of water.
2. Add a teaspoon of coarse dried amla powder and a half a teaspoon of freshly crushed ginger.
3. Let it simmer for 10 minutes on medium flame.
4. Strain and drink.

Drink this tea twice every day and see the impact yourself!

Healthy Diet To Control High Blood Pressure

Hypertension or high blood pressure is when the pressure with which your blood is pumped into your artery walls is high.
Besides exercise and major lifestyle changes, doctors recommend dietary changes as some of the best ways to deal with hypertension. When you have high blood pressure, you must have a healthy and balanced meal every day which should include 2-3 varieties of fruits and 3-4 servings of vegetables. Here are some foods that are excellent for your heart and blood pressure:

Amalaki: Amla(Indian Gooseberry) is commonly used in Ayurvedic formulations for heart disorders. Amla has been found to reduce bad cholesterol levels in the blood. Vitamin C-rich amla can also help widen the blood vessels and thus reducing blood pressure.

Berries: Flavonoid-rich berries especially, blueberries, raspberries and strawberries, have abundant minerals like potassium and anthocyanin that have been found to exhibit anti-inflammatory effects on the arterial walls.

Beetroot: Nitrate and potassium in beetroot can help control your blood pressure levels. In fact, a research has found that a glass of beetroot can lower blood pressure within 24 hours of consumption.

Dark chocolate: According to a report published in  BMC Medicine, dark chocolate has flavanols which can reduce blood pressure. Flavanols help with the formation of nitric oxide that helps keep blood pressure in check. Even though dark chocolate is healthy, you must make sure you do not overindulge. Stick to 1-2 pieces daily.

Garlic: Garlic extracts have been found to relax the muscles of the arteries. This helps reduce both the diastolic as well as the systolic blood pressure.

Milk and milk products: These are rich in calcium which can affect blood pressure. Calcium is responsible for normal and smooth muscle contraction that helps blood vessels transport blood efficiently.

Radish: Radish leaves are famed for their antihypertensive properties because they contain ethyl acetate which controls blood pressure.

Whole grains: It is important to include lots of fibre in your diet. In fibre-rich whole grains, the compounds help break down the cholesterol deposited in the arteries. This could help make the blood pressure normal.  You can include whole grains in your rotis every day.

Amalaki (Indian gooseberry) - the best Ayurvedic medicine to control high blood sugar

Many people living with diabetes are now turning to complementary and alternative medicine, including Ayurvedic medications, to control their blood sugar and avoid complications that may be caused by this condition.
Amalaki, Amla, or Indian gooseberry (scientific name Emblica Officinalis) is a powerful herb extensively used in Ayurvedic preparations to treat several chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes in Ayurveda.

Research studies have brought to light the potential anti-diabetic effects of amla. One study using amla extracts on diabetic animals showed that the berry can cause blood glucose to drop. Also, another study on diabetic rats suggested that amla juice may help treat certain health problems common in people with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Furthermore, a 2011 study found that people - with or without diabetes - who took amla fruit powder developed a significant decrease in both fasting and post-prandial blood glucose levels, indicating that the Indian gooseberry may effectively help in managing diabetes. The Indian gooseberry also contains chromium that regulates carbohydrate metabolism and may make the body more responsive to insulin, which in turn helps to keep blood sugar at a healthy range.

Yoga, Ayurveda making waves in Britain

An active campaign is under way to take the message of Ayurveda to students and homemakers in the United Kingdom, since yoga and traditional methods of treatment such as Ayurveda complement modern medicine in treating lifestyle-related and other diseases, Bob Blackman, Britain’s three-time Conservative MP, has said.
Keeping this in mind, students and health workers from Britain would be sent to Kerala to be trained in Ayurvedic treatment and lifestyle.
Traditional medicine was important since villages the world over had medicinal preparations made from plants, herbs and spices, he said, at a meeting organised here on Monday by Kochi-based Tourism Professionals Club.
Yoga has already been included in Britain’s National Health Service (NHS), for well-being and a healthier lifestyle, to complement modern medicine. “The world has acknowledged that both yoga and Ayurveda can prevent the onset of many ailments. The time is ripe to convince insurance firms that extending medical insurance to Ayurveda treatment would lessen reliance on emergency medical care and surgeries,” said Mr. Blackman, a long-term friend of India.

A healthy diet is not only about food

Our diet and eating habits have changed dramatically over the last century. We can see the difference for ourselves by comparing the food that is commonly available today and what our grandparents generally used to consume.
When we go back to basics of why we eat, essentially, it is for nourishment. Based on  Ayurvedic medicine, the purpose is deeper – to enhance and promote the healthy flow of life force within the body, which in turn promotes good health and helps us keep illnesses at bay.
The problem is a lot of our go-to foods today contain very little vital nutrients. Meanwhile, the rise the pollution and stress actually calls for more vital nutrients to mitigate the side effects of our environment and lifestyle.
Still, it is not all about what we eat. It is also about how we eat, when, where and why?
It is not the food you eat but how well you digest it that’s important. According to ancient Indian doctrine, good digestion determines our health and the strength of our inner life force. When our digestive system is afflicted, so is our system of nourishment and and removal of waste including toxins. With a healthy digestive system, whatever food we consume would be completely digested with anything harmful, effectively removed from our body. Thus, top priority in promoting good digestion. But how?
-- Do not eat when you are not hungry
It is a tell-tale sign that there is still food in the stomach that is not digested.
-- Skip a meal
Only eat when you’re really hungry. There is a big difference between artificial hunger, which is psychological and real hunger. If you’re not sure which it is, it’s best to go without a meal.
-- Cut down number of meals
As we lead more sedentary lives today, we don’t really need as much food to sustain our daily activities. Many of us could do with just two meals a day. This will ensure that whatever we consume is digested.
-- Get active
If it is too difficult to cut down on meal times, make sure to get active. Daily exercise helps regulate our digestive system. Whether our digestion is erratic, high or weak, regular exercise will lead to healthy digestion. A long walk after a meal, also helps with digestion.
-- Eat less
Always eat just half of your stomach capacity. You should feel slightly hungry even after eating, instead of feeling stuffed, which doesn’t allow movement in the stomach and slows down digestion.

Ayurvedic medicines could be more effective than allopathic drugs in treating Parkinson’s disease, according to eminent neuroscientist Dr V.S. Ramachandran.
Dr Ramachandran was selected by Time magazine as one among the 100 most influential persons in the world in 2011.

The Ayurvedic drug Atmagupta or Kapikacchu (macuna pruriensis), a variety of bean rich in L-dopa, was shown in clinical trials to be more effective than allopathic drug-placebo and synthetic L- dopa used to treat Parkinson’s disease.

Dopa that crosses the blood-brain barrier when consumed orally was hailed as a miracle in neurology. However, some patients become wheelchair-bound and the quality of life deteriorates.
