Ayurvedic treatment for sinusitis

Sinusitis treatment involves a detoxification through Panchakarma, oral medicines, diet and modification of life style.

Ayurvedic therapies like Nasyam, Lepanam, Thalam, Vamanam and Shirodhara are  beneficial. Ayurveda suggests Jal Neti Kriya. It is a technique to cleanse the nasal path and to remove mucus and blockages. Regular practice of this Kriya keeps the nasal passages clean and reduces the chances of sinusitis.


Recommended Diet:
A Vata Kapha calming diet is recommended to pacify Prana Vata and Shleshaka Kapha. Patients should avoid hot chillies, cold drinks and ice creams.

No frequent cool water head bath, only to take warm water bath.
Dry the hair immediately after bath.
Avoid severe sun rays and chill climate.
Do not eat full stomach and avoid fried and oily foods.
Avoid chocolate, ice creams, milk sweets.
Morning walk in fresh air.
Avoid cigarette and alcohol drinks.

Brahmi

Sattvic diet

Sattvic diet is a diet based on foods in ayurvedic and yogic literature that contain the quality (guna) sattva In this system of dietary classification, foods that decrease the energy of the body are considered Tamasic, while those increase the energy of the body are considered Rajasic.

A sattvic diet is meant to include foods and eating habits that are "pure, essential, natural, vital, energy-containing, clean, conscious, true, honest. A sattvic diet can also exemplify the religious principle Ahimsa, the doctrine of non-violence, or not causing harm to other living things, which is one reason why yogis often follow a vegetarian diet.

A sattvic diet is a regimen that places emphasis on seasonal foods, fruits, dairy products, nuts, seeds, oils, ripe vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and non-meat based proteins. Some sattvic diet suggestions, such as its relative emphasis on dairy products, are controversial.

A sattvic diet is sometimes referred to as yogic diet or yoga diet in modern literature. In ancient and medieval era Yoga literature, the concept discussed is Mitahara, which literally means "moderation in eating".

Ayurvedic herbs that will keep your body cool

Jatamansi
This extremely cooling ingredient is a mild sedative that calms the body and mind.Jatamansi is excellent to reduce heat in the head. Mix a tsp of the powder in a glass of hot or boiling water, keep it covered for four to six hours, then strain and drink before bed.

Amalaki
Amla in any form in extremely cooling, however as fresh amla is not available in summer, you could go for the powder form or eat it as a murabba (a sweet fruit preserve). Amla cools body from the inside—it is an excellent antioxidant, and works to reduce heat all the way from the upper respiratory area to the lower GI tract. Mix a tsp of the powder in your juice during summer or boil mint leaves to make tea and add a tsp of the powder.

Bael
Also called bilva, this is one of the most effective summer coolers. It reduces heat in the liver and intestines, soothes acidity and disturbed digestion. Scoop out the fruit, puree with water and drink with a bit of rock salt for best results.

Sandalwood
While topical sandalwood calms a heat rash, it can also be consumed. It is extremely cooling for the lymph, blood and circulatory systems. It can be especially handy during a sunstroke. You can consume two to four tsps of Chandanasav (an Ayurvedic preparation) twice a day if you’re prone to a heat stroke, have a burning sensation or low hydration.”

Khus
Also known as Ushira in Sanskrit and vetiver in English, khus sherbet used to be an essential summer drink.You can reap the benefits of its roots to keep your body cool by infusing the ingredient in water. “Add a bundle of the roots to your water bottle or toss them into a clay matka to stay cool during summer.”

Gulab
Rose benefits the skin equally whether it is eaten or applied. To make a rose milkshake, blend a handful of organic fresh or dry rose petals with a glass of milk and drink up. Use a spoonful of honey to sweeten the shake.

Mulethi
 Liquorice or mulethi is an ideal ingredient to sooth the upper respiratory tract. It is good for when you feel like you may come down with the flu or for irritations in the throat. Just chew on a stick to reap its benefits.

Shatavari
The effect of this herb is extremely cooling. You can take a tsp of this with water or milk anytime of the day.

Anantmool

Amalaki (Indian gooseberry) - the best Ayurvedic medicine to control high blood sugar

Many people living with diabetes are now turning to complementary and alternative medicine, including Ayurvedic medications, to control their blood sugar and avoid complications that may be caused by this condition.

Ayurvedic Herb punarnava helps in preventing and managing kidney ailments

In view of limited options for treatment of the kidney disease in allopathy, experts representing the traditional medical system claimed on the eve of the World Kidney Day that Ayurvedic herbs could slow the disease's progression and offer relief from the symptoms, along with careful diet and exercise.
Two recent scientific studies have claimed that herbal formulations, based on traditional medicinal plants like punarnava, could be effective in preventing and managing ailments related to the kidney.According to a study, a woman suffering from kidney ailment was given punarnava-based syrup for a month, significantly bringing the creatinine and urea level in her blood to a healthy level.
Besides, her haemoglobin level had also improved, concluding that the punanrva-based drugs not only improve the functioning of the kidney but also improve haemoglobin level.
The study, conducted at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), was published in the World Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmaceuticals Science in 2017.
Another study published in the Indo American Journal of Pharmaceutical Research, too, stated the efficacy of the punarnava-based herbal formulations, including lotus leaves, patharchur and other major herbs when given to the subjects. It was found that the drug had helped in maintaining histological parameter of kidneys, apart from reducing high levels of uric acid and electrolytes.

Yoga, Ayurveda making waves in Britain

An active campaign is under way to take the message of Ayurveda to students and homemakers in the United Kingdom, since yoga and traditional methods of treatment such as Ayurveda complement modern medicine in treating lifestyle-related and other diseases, Bob Blackman, Britain’s three-time Conservative MP, has said.
Keeping this in mind, students and health workers from Britain would be sent to Kerala to be trained in Ayurvedic treatment and lifestyle.
Traditional medicine was important since villages the world over had medicinal preparations made from plants, herbs and spices, he said, at a meeting organised here on Monday by Kochi-based Tourism Professionals Club.
Yoga has already been included in Britain’s National Health Service (NHS), for well-being and a healthier lifestyle, to complement modern medicine. “The world has acknowledged that both yoga and Ayurveda can prevent the onset of many ailments. The time is ripe to convince insurance firms that extending medical insurance to Ayurveda treatment would lessen reliance on emergency medical care and surgeries,” said Mr. Blackman, a long-term friend of India.

Include Holy basil (Tulsi) in your diet to prevent or control type 2 diabetes

Holy basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum), commonly referred to as Tulsi in Hindi, is regarded as one of the most important plants in Ayurveda for its diverse medicinal properties. As we lead more sedentary lives today, we don’t really need as much food to sustain our daily activities. Many of us could do with just two meals a day. This will ensure that whatever we consume is digested.
-- Get active
If it is too difficult to cut down on meal times, make sure to get active. Daily exercise helps regulate our digestive system. Whether our digestion is erratic, high or weak, regular exercise will lead to healthy digestion. A long walk after a meal, also helps with digestion.
-- Eat less
Always eat just half of your stomach capacity. You should feel slightly hungry even after eating, instead of feeling stuffed, which doesn’t allow movement in the stomach and slows down digestion.

Effective Ayurvedic remedies For Heel Pain

Heel pain can be effectively reduced if two Ayurvedic medicated oils – Kottamchukkadi thailam and Sahacharadi thailam – are mixed, heated a little and applied on the heel. ‘Dhara’ of this oil mixture for 20 min. with mild heat would also help.

Ayurvedic medicines For treating Parkinson's disease

Ayurvedic medicines could be more effective than allopathic drugs in treating Parkinson’s disease, according to eminent neuroscientist Dr V.S. Ramachandran.

The excessive presence of an abnormal protein called alpha-synuclein present in the brain regions which are involved in controlling posture, coordination of walking and speech results in the destruction of the cells and the introduction of L-dopa. Dopa that crosses the blood-brain barrier when consumed orally was hailed as a miracle in neurology. However, some patients become wheelchair-bound and the quality of life deteriorates.

Ayurveda-for-diabetes campaign by Centre

New Delhi: Stepping up efforts to fight the spread of diabetes that afflicts 7.29 crore Indians, the Union government is ready with a mega educational campaign ahead of the World Diabetes Day observed on November 14 every year.

Officials said the awareness drive of the Ayush ministry will revolve around the theme ‘The Family and Diabetes’ with a special focus on promoting ayurvedic medicines to fight the disease.

The ministry is planning to work in mission mode to promote traditional medicines to counter diabetes, realising that by 2030 nearly 9 per cent of India’s population is likely to be affected from this chronic, metabolic disease that takes a toll on vital organs and damages tissues.

According to the WHO, diabetes affects approximately 42 crore people worldwide with China topping the list. In 2017, China had 11.43 crore people suffering from diabetes followed by India with 7.29 crore.

Minister of state of Ayush Shripad Naik has said that the government is promoting research in alternative traditional medicines and their integration with modern medicine.

The Ayush ministry has also launched ‘Madhumeha Mission’ — integrating Ayurveda with modern medicine — at health centres across the country.

The WHO has listed 21,000 medicinal plants across the world and out of these 2,500 species are found in India. Nearly 150 species are currently being used commercially for producing medicines.

The Central government has also roped in IIT-Bombay and AIIMS for conducting research to counter allegations that ayurvedic medicines are not effective.

In India, herbs like daruharidra, giloy, gudmar and bitter gourds have been commonly used as anti-diabetic and anti-hyperglycemic agents as these not only target the reason of the disease but also improve a patient’s immunity.

Diet Tips For Rainy season

Finally Monsoons have arrived. Reckless eating during the rains can cause a health problems. The monsoon season reduces the immunity of a human body. It can trigger certain health problems such as allergies, infections, indigestion, hyperacidity, skin disorders and hair fall. Increased humidity during the monsoons can reduce the digestive capacity, and the lack of oxygen in the air can cause breathlessness and general weakness.

What we need during the monsoon months are improved resistance and a robust digestive system. Here are some Ayurvedic diet tips to kindle our digestive fire and boost the immune system.

Ginger and Rock Salt

Ginger is highly valued in Ayurveda for its digestive properties and myriad health benefits. To rouse the sluggish digestive system in the monsoons, Dr. Bhagwati recommends chewing a piece of ginger with some rock salt and a squirt of lemon juice. This activates the digestive process, relieving problems like flatulence, bloating and indigestion.

Drink Rasam With Food

Most of us know rasam as an accompaniment with South Indian meals. The spicy soup-like preparation is made by boiling lentils in a base of tamarind, spices and asafoetida. Meat Eaters, Go Light

If you are a meat eater, steer clear of oily preparations. Rich meat-based dishes are difficult to digest during the monsoons, which can worsen your health problems. Ideally, stick to a vegetarian diet during the rains. But if you must eat meat, have light preparations like stews and soups.

Drink Herbal Teas

There’s nothing more comforting than a cup of hot tea in the rains. Use spices such as ginger, pepper, mint and basil to supersize the nutritional value of your daily cuppa. These spices boost the immune system, helping your body ward off any infection that could come your way.

Eat Seasonal

Fruits like apples and pears have astringent quality and are recommended for the monsoons. So have as many as you may please. But keep a safe distance from mangoes and eat them in moderation. The king of fruits can aggravate kapha and vata problems, leading to acne.

Avoid Raw Food

Even if you are a weight loss diet, refrain from eating raw vegetables as it can lead to gastric problems. Lightly steaming or boiling them will kill the pathogens, making them safe for consumption during the rains.

World Asthma Day 2018

May 1st  is World Asthma Day and the theme for this year is 'Never too early, never too late. It's always the right time to address airways disease.' May 1st is commemorated as World Asthma Day in order to raise awareness about this chronic respiratory disease that is prevalent in children nowadays.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), asthma is not just a public health problem in developed countries. In developing countries; however, the incidence of the disease varies greatly. According to its report, India has estimated 15-20 million asthmatics.

Asthma is a chronic lung disorder that is caused due to inflammation in the airways. The airways are said to become narrower and are filled with mucus, further blocking the airflow. Ayurveda for Liver Disorders

Fat fighter herb tea

Here’s an ayurvedic fat fighter tea — best made in the morning and sipped warm throughout the day. It includes a combination of ingredients that not only help break down fat, but also helps improve digestion and unblock channels in the body by removing toxins.
Ingredients
1/4 to 1/2 tsp whole cumin seeds
1/4 to 1/2 tsp whole coriander seeds
1/4 to 1/2 tsp whole fennel seeds
5 cups boiling water
Instructions
Boil water in a pot. Add seeds to the water and continue to boil for five minutes with the lid on.
Strain out seeds and pour the tea into a thermos.
Take small sips throughout the day. If you experience any discomfort, reduce seeds to 1/4 teaspoon each for two weeks. Then increase back to 1/2 a teaspoon.

Film on First Indian American Ayurvedic Doctor in the U.S.

A feature-length documentary about Indian American Dr. Vasant Lad, the first person to bring Ayurveda from India to the U.S., has been acquired by Zeitgeist Films and Kino Lorber.
Under the companies’ deal, Zeitgeist will market and release the film theatrically and Kino Lorber will handle home entertainment, adds the report.
According to Zeitgeist Films, “The Doctor From India” will premiere at the 2018 Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
Directed by Jeremy Frindel, the film, titled, “The Doctor From India,” is the fascinating story of Lad’s mission to bring the ancient healthcare system of wellness from India to the West in the late ‘70s.
In this meditative, immersive portrait, with interviewees, including Indian American author and Ayurvedic practitioner Deepak Chopra, Frindel documents the life and work of Lad who, fulfilling his destiny as foretold by his family guru, became a holistic health pioneer, helping to bring Ayurveda, which was almost unknown when he first arrived in the West, to become one of the most prominent alternative health systems in the world today.
A native of India, Lad was a professor of clinical medicine at the Pune University College of Ayurvedic Medicine for 15 years. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Ayurvedic medicine and surgery from the University of Pune and a master’s degree in Ayurvedic science from Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya. Lad’s academic and practical training include the study of Allopathy (western medicine) and surgery as well as traditional Ayurveda.
In 1984, Lad founded The Ayurvedic Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Since 1986, the institute has been based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Lad serves as the director of the institute.
Lad has written 11 books on Ayurveda as well as hundreds of articles and other writings. With over 500,000 copies of his books in print in the U.S., his work has been translated into more than 20 languages.

Ayurvedic herbs to strengthen Immunity in HIV patients

Ayurvedic Treatment of Fibromyalgia

The aggravation of Vata Dosha or accumulation of Ama (toxins) are the primary causes . There is associated weak digestion, constipation, and effects of chronic stress also and that should also be tackled.

The treatment of fibromyalgia, which is primarily a Vātavyadhi disease, focuses on both Vāta Shamana (re-balance) and Samshodhana (purification) along with management of Ama.

Panchakarma therapy: This is the main line of treatment in this disorder and ideally is the initial intervention in fibromyalgia if the patient has no contraindications. Purification measures namely 'Snehan' and 'Swedan' are very effective to balance 'Vata' and helps to dissolve toxins. Medicated oil is applied to the entire body followed by fomentation therapy with herbal decoction. This Snehana and Swedana therapy provides a deeply soothing and balancing effect to Vata. The friction and movements massage creates heat which enhances circulation and helps cleanse the Ama or other impurities that could be aggravating and hypersensitizing nerve tissues. For these purpose –Bala Taila / Ksheerbala Taila / Mahanarayana Taila / Kottamchukadi Taila / Dhanvantara Taila etc can be used. Patients with predominance of Kapha can undergo Vamana by using Madanphala Yoga. Similarly with Pitta aggravation, Virechana can be planned with Trivritta Avaleha, Avipattikara Churna, Eranda oil or Triphala Churna depending on Koshtha. In stress prone individuals who have sleep and mood disturbances, Sirovirechana or Nasya can be planned.
Patients with constipation, debility and other Vata predominant features may undergo Matra Basti or a schedule of Kala or Yoga Basti.

Ayurvedic palliative medicines: If there is pain or stiffness or tenderness-Dashamula Kwath / Dashamularishtam, Rasnadi Guggulu, Yograj Guggulu, Simhanad Guggulu can be prescribed. If pain is associated with fatigue – Rasayana Churna, Chayvanaprasha, Bala Churna, Ashvagandha Churna or Gokshura Churna can be given with milk or water twice or thrice daily. If there is mood swing / sleep disturbances then Mansyadi Kwath with Brahmi Churna + Sankhapusphi Churna + Jatamansi Churna can be prescribed along with other medicines as per requirement.

Yoga Practice:  It is documented that fibromyalgia is often worsened by excessive stress, anxiety and mental fatigue. There are hormonal changes and other biochemical responses to stress that can aggravate the nervous system, and the immune response and affects quality of sleep pattern which in turn aggravates the fibromyalgia syndrome. Various stretching exercises are known to have a positive effect on fibromyalgia. Regular practicing of different yogic postures are helpful. Shavasana (Corpse posture) brings about a relaxed state of mind, Pranayama (Yogic breathing practices) create a state of restful alertness in mind and body.

Diet and nutrition: The diet normally advised for patients of fibromyalgia is a modified Vata-pacifying diet (Pathyam). It should include:
• Vegetable juices and soups prepared  from Guard, bottle guard, carrot, tomato, pumpkin, spinach, beet root.
• Coconut water.
• Kichadi (recipe made by cooking red/bran rice and mung dal.)
• Warm milk with spices like cinnamon, cardamom, ginger and clove
Fibromyalgia patients should avoid the following food articles (Apathyam) and behaviors:
• Hot (spicy) and fried foods; processed, excessive salt or sugar; very bitter and astringent foods, cauliflower, brinjal, potatoes.
• Excessive tea, coffee, alcohol, curd, chocolate, cocoa, milk.
• Sleeping during the day and staying up late at night.
• Mental tensions like worry, anxiety, fear, stress and grief.

Asthma: Effective Home Remedies
